The Perfect Painting Surface

hi lads

im wanting to respray my forks

they have already been painted by the guy i bought them off

what do you recommend to firstly recommend to remove the paint and get the best surface to then reapply another coat

nitromorse? sandpaper? wire brush?

they are really nice forks so i dont want to do a bodge job

righto...er id say nitromorse them back, then prep them with some 120 grit sandapaper....primer onto this, then spray your top coat, also, remember to lacquer.

Paint should be sprayed indoors ideally, in a low humidity, high heat environment ideally.

This last point is very important if you want a really good finnish.

If you spray them in the cold you won't get good atomisation.

If it is humid, the paint will get a fine spiders web patern in it.

If you don't have enough ventilation you will die.

A good tip is to run the can under warm water for about 15 secs (warm not hot) then shake it, the can will go cold again, run it under the tap again for 15 secs, then shake it. Reapeat until when you shake it the can remains warm.

This will help the paint atomise better and go on go on smoother.

Also one thing many people don't do is clear the nozzle now and again as your spraying. To do this turn the can upside down and spray away from the bike for a couple of seconds, now turn the can the right way round and spray away from the bike for 2 secs, continue spraying.
