What Difference Does A Long/short Wheelbase Make?

I'm looking at a load of mod frames and noticed quite a few of them come as long/short options

What's the difference and how does it affect the ride? I think I read briefly here that long frames are better suited to natural, and short frames are better for street/urban riding.

I found a nice KO KM-1 bike for sale, only its the long version, and I live in London. Strictly street for me.

Is it going to make an impact on my progress if I get the long frame?

Shorter frames are generally better for maneuverability. However longer frames are better for getting more leverage for gaps and side hops and such.

Having a long or short frame depends on personal preference, not whether your riding street or not aural, however people who ride street (people who go for big gaps and such) tend to get longer bikes, and people who ride comps get shorter bikes so they can throw them around the section.

What i would try do is get a bike around 1000 - 1010 WB and go from there. Short bikes are generally easier to learn on.

JT's fairly on the money in terms of how it affects riding - shorts do tend to make bunnyhops and general tricks a bit easier, but for anything that you need to kick into (e.g. gaps, taps, sidehops) longer frames are usually a bit better.

But yeah, with your particular situation just literally get any reputable frame. You haven't had a trials bike before and so you've got no real frame of reference for whatever you get, so whatever you get is going to feel weird, if you see what I mean? If you've got nothing you're used to, you'll get used to anything. You just learn on that frame and ride in that style, pretty much. My first trials bike was a freakishly short original-style Onza T-Bird. Progressed from that to frames that gradually got longer and longer and they fitted my style a bit better. But fundamentally, you can learn anything on any trials frame, which is why the top riders can jump on whichever frame their sponsors give them and still ride well. Nothing really makes up for just getting out and practising, so just get whatever frame you can get ASAP, then get out and start riding!
