Right Spoke Length

Hey, how can I find out what length spokes I'll need for any hub and rim combo?

Right now, I'm thinking of splashing out on a custom rear wheel. How will I know that I've bought the right length spokes to fit the 19" rim?

I know that I should be measuring from flange to nipple hole (or whatever the proper name is), but doesn't how you thread the spokes also make a difference to the length you need?

what rim and hub are you looking to get?

you need to know..

the Rims ERD

the hub flange diameter

and the hub centre to flange diameter

all which will/should be stated on the website you buy from.

once you know all these you can put the numbers into the dt swiss spoke length calculator and it will tell you what length you need.

edit: you should run a 3-cross lacing pattern on both sides of the wheel if you can. the strongest pattern.

actually maybe 4-cross but you might as well do 3-cross. ;)

Thanks!

I take it that a 3-cross and a 4-cross will both work on a 32H rim/hub?

I'm not sure where the information on the ERD is? In fact, what is an ERD? Something something diameter?

rims to choose from:

or

and a closed fixed disc hub. probably either:
