Magura Problem No.298483

Right then ladies and gentlemen...

I have an 05 Magura set up with a bodged 04 lever. It was waterblead and it started to go a bit lame after a few months of riding, although the brake was still locking on without a problem, the feel in the lever wasn't quite right to me, the bodged TPA also had no effect.

So off came the brake, I drained it, blasted it through with air to clean out any crap, unscrewed the TPA and then did a water bleed. When I had finished the bleed, it worked ok, but it felt shit and weak. So I blead it through again for good measure.

This time it felt a lot better, although the lever had to FULLY engage before the cylinders came out, which was obviously no good. I assumed it was a problem with the TPA so I dismantled the lever, threw it in the bath again and used an allen key to bleed it again (using the allen key to press in where the lever normally would). There appeared to be a lot more force on the cylinders this time and it was looking promising.

I put the lever back on, it felt shit but it was an improvement. I fitted it to the bike and went out for a ride...worse.brake.ever. It just slipped all the time, no 'lock' on the back wheel at all.

I'm not exactly sure on whats has caused this, and why the lever seems to have gone so slack. Visually the lever and components are sound, but the TPA bodge has no effect.

Its hard to describe the feel of the brake, its like there is no compression there, nothing to force the water. I have blead the brake well, no air so that cannot be a cause.

I'm wondering if I have assembled it incorrectly after cleaning the parts out. Does it matter which caliper/hole the the lever hose goes into? I don't see why it would, it anything is a possibility.

None of the parts are jammed, all in sound condition and the brake worked well before the bleed.

I'm not home at the minute, but I need to know asap what the cause is/could be, so any suggestions are a great help. :)

What you're describing sounds like air in the system.... Bleeding with an allen key??? Have you got a proper bleed kit (with syringe etc)?? If not, get or make one. You can't bleed a magura in the same way as a resivoir system.

I mean using the allen key to push in the 'pump' where the lever would normally, so basically putting an allen key in where the lever goes to get a maximum 'push' on it.

I don't have a proper bleed kit, I prefer water, I used the bath method to bleed it not in the same way as a reservoir, although I don't exactly know what you meant by that and I don't know what method you think I'm using :S

The likelihood of air in the system seems pretty slim. I completely dismantled the brake, submerged it in the bath shook, squeezed and pulled parts to ensure they were filled with water and then re-constructed the brake whilst obviously still under water.

And £4 from MJ cycles is no excuse not to have one.

Do you know how long I have to busk for 4 quid? :)

Normally the bath works fine, I'm a cheapskate and its just...well...there. Water is free, either way it goes into the system bath or syringe. The bath method has worked for me every other time with great results.
