Ebay Advice...

So I put my old saracen sahara on ebay, to fund the trials bike i'm building, and then used the saracen for the first time in years and came home with a loose bottom bracket!!

I was not expecting to get a huge amount of cash for the bike, maybe £40 on a good day, but now the chances of someone wanting it are more slim, despite the fact that I have dropped the start price to £15!!

Now I also happen to be selling an old bottom bracket on ebay, a TA one, so this leaves me with a couple of options, for which I'd appreciate your advice...

Option 1)

take the bottom bracket off ebay and put it on the saracen bike,

BUT

I'll need to buy a crank extractor and a splined thingy to take off the bottom bracket, and if the bike does not then sell I'm further out of pocket, plus the fact there seems to be some chance of selling the BB (although at the mo its on 2 freeking quid!)

Option 2)

amend the saracen (as I've done) and see if the thing sells, leave the BB alone and let that sell too.

BUT

if the saracen does not sell and the BB never leaves £2 that means I've not made any money (bearing in mind that I had to pay to sell on ebay), and if I take replace the BB I might make £40!!

What do you recon? will I flog the saracen? will the BB make any more than £2? Should I buy the tools and repace the faulty one?

If you haven't got the tools, take it to a local bike shop, and get them to replace it.

If its a square tapered BB in it, you could get something like a Shimano UN52 for £11.99 off Chainreactioncycles.

Or from the shop, if they have any.

Costs money to make money. ;)

I did ride it gently down to the local bike shop, the guy there took one look at it and told me it was a sealed unit and then went on to first try and sell me a new bottom bracket (£30) then when I said I had one and I'd do it myself if i had the tools he went on to try and sell me a splined bottom bracket socket for £12!!

Wright Pads - thanks for the offer mate, but unfortunatly I'm stuck here in sunny hatfield

adamtrials - do you think someone wanted to buy a cheap old bike is gonna have the tools to change the bottom bracket? I do have a mate that has the tools but he has just moved back home after the end of uni, selfish cnut!
