2 BB spacers and then 3mm spacer on the axle. I tried 2mm but it just scraped so 3mm was pretty much spot on. Just gotta get a rear wheel now and then i can finish it all off!20180110_170717.thumb.jpg.04c69dc497086e12371a37ac4043ec44.jpg

That's pretty close, instead of those plastic washers I use an aluminium washer from a hope or any single speed kit that fits on a hub freewheel. Stronger then those plastic ones.

Seems to be in good order now thanks to you guys !

went to my lbs and got a 25mm spacer, same width as the 24mm shimano spacers.  Worked a treat, hopefully nothing goes foul when I pedal kick- I’ve got ~1mm or so of clearance now... I will end up grinding a tiny bit off the teeth if such a thing happens, for future readers- just added the spacer on the drive side crank before I slipped it on like they suggested here.

Fired up to get back on this bike... crashed hard January ‘16 and haven’t properly been able to ride since... slowly recovering with the help of a good pt.  Life’s a b#### sometimes

Still looks pretty close. If you took the the none drive side washer out and put it in the drive side with the other washers it should give you even more clearance. Or get a metal/aluminium washer the same thickness as all three (because those plastic ones can be rubbish to tighten further then you want. Try some single speed washers off a freewheel like this. That's what I run, and you can tighten it as much as possible

  3. In the past I've taken a Hope rear sprocket spacer from a hope free wheel that you get with a new hub, added that instead of the plastic spacers that come with Shimano bb. Only because they crush quite easily. Plus as the Dave + Ali have said as well,  I've also added the spacer on the crank axle to help. But from looking at your cranks now I wouldn't of filed the tabs for the bolts, only because they maybe more weak now and your chain may rub on the bolts holding your bashguard.

  4. I rode with these brakes earlier this year too see what the bite was like as there just 2 piston. I'm back on Zee's now as I like a bit more hold. What I can suggest is too buy some EBC red pads too fit and give more hold, these https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ebc-Shimano-Deore-Hydraulic-525-Disc-Brake-Pad-Red-Bike-Cycling-/122617527711?epid=0&hash=item1c8c92fd9f%3Ag%3A-vwAAOSw7ChZeKbQ&_trkparms=pageci%3A979165f3-93c8-11e7-a73f-74dbd1805fb6%7Cparentrq%3A5c53a96215e0ace037faaa3dfffa19b6%7Ciid%3A3Also what size rotors do you run? If your running 203mm, a lot of people break calipers because of the less strength in standard brake adaptors. If you Get one of these It will take the strain off https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B073VR6J79/ref=mp_s_a_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1504787740&sr=8-22&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=brake+adapter+203mm+hayes&dpPl=1&dpID=417uGY%2BLmsL&ref=plSrch

One last thing, too stop the pads rocking I tapped out the holes where the axle pin for the pads go and fitted one of these too stop the pads from rocking, this https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-XT-M785-Pad-Axle-and-Snap-Ring-Pad-Holder-Pin-Screw-for-XT-Saint-/191710530976?hash=item2ca2d68da0%3Ag%3Ao0UAAOSwRH5XLF2m&_trkparms=pageci%3Aad69efdf-93c9-11e7-8eb6-74dbd18069e7%7Cparentrq%3A5c5ac65315e0abc0305dec67fff7c132%7Ciid%3A1

I didn't but Ben Travis also only rides 180mm rotors with Magura MT6 stock pads.

I think Ben prefers to run that setup to have less sensitive braking. I rode with him a few weeks back in Bristol and he said he didn't mind the setup but when I had a go on his bike I preferred more locking power on the rear brake compared to his being less. 4piston calipers will always give you a better lock. But I also went back too 2piston on a cheap pair of Shimano deore brakes myself. Only  thing I did was make the setup on them as best as I could. Taped out the pin holder for the pads so I could put a threaded one in to stop the rocking of the pads and fit Red EBC pads. There was more sensitive braking on the front brake as it's on the back of the fork which was great and perfect but you could feel the difference compared too the rear as there's not so much.  As long as you get a FAT rear brake adapter just incase you snap a Caliper while running large rotors, 203mm magura or Shimano one, and pads of your choice (mine have always been EBC off eBay) then it will all work. :)

Cheers Luke for the info yeah the brake works fine and then it's is there just seems to be lacking a little so I might go down the road of different pads and new adapters and rotors.

Cheers john that was gonna be my next question was pads and I think I'm gonna go down the road of EBC reds and cheers for the link on the adapters gone and ordered two now just for rotors.

No problem, also with many magura calipers they don't come with this threaded pad pin to stop the pads rocking. http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/191710530976?_mwBanner=1 this will fit magura as well as the standard Shimano calipers.

  7. Magura EBC Red or magura Trialtech pads are a good choice of brake pads for extra bite. Also if you go too a 203mm rotor, it would be best to upgrade the rear brake adaptor to a much fatter one to take the strain off the bite and flex. It because a lot of people have broken there calipers from upgrading too larger rotors. This type will help https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B073VR6J79/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1502361194&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=Hayes+203mm+rear+adapter&dpPl=1&dpID=417uGY%2BLmsL&ref=plSrch

    I rode today.

I had the impression I was on wet grass or mud at several occasions, then I realized my Hope had failed.

    This ever happened to someone?
The ratchet system seems in top shape, sounds like the outer ring, which is screwed into the hub shell ripped the threads.

The hub has about 1 year of pure trials use.

It's your ratchet that's rounded inside the body of the hub, I've had the same issue. Go onto hope tech website, fill out the warranty form and print it off. Box the hub up with the form and send it to there address. If the body of the hub is in warranty then they will replace the body and ratchet under warranty. If not then you will probably have to buy a New body for £30 I think. I've sent one back last year and had to pay as it was out if date. But fingers crossed yours isn't. Hope  That helps

Not really sure why it's taken me a month to realise this but I'm currently working in Carmarthen and rather than heading back to my B&B each night, it'd be nice to get out and about to make the most of my time here.

I've spent a few evenings driving through the Black Mountains which was very nice, but if anyone is in the area and fancies a pint one evening let me know. Will be around on and off for the next 6 weeks or so.

I'm staying in Brechfa, so to the NE of Carmarthen itself, but happy to head further afield, down to Tenby, Milford Haven, up to Cardigan etc. for a social.

If you got the bike with you dude pop down porthcawl.

Worlds at addingham were 2005, "I woz thair" & I do believe I still have the program somewhere. I distinctly remember watching him on the diamondback, going round with Mr. Ashton on the silver frame with red forks, with Chris Akrigg in tow on the 'mongoose' (in reality a painted and stickered up megamo) :looks at MBUK poster of him on the giants causeway hanging on the wall to concour:

I also recall the section over the other side of the hill (furthest away from the road) involved a severe 15+ft. drop to flat/scrappy rock and the other ashton team rider (The name of the rider escapes me) had his rear brake slip at the top resulting in him bailing out onto his lower back. The section must have been set out to get rider's to go Fuuuuuuuk that! & take 5's but in 20/20 hindsight it was just dangerous. The rider got up and limped away with help but only after a fairly tense 10mins with the 1st aiders and the spinal board.

It was Gav, I was there that weekend with him.

There is a through bolt version of the SSP hub too.

there is a bolt through for the skyes and crewkerz bikes too if i remember correctly. no idea if they can be converted...

The main thing is, normally it would come as standard with bolts. Possibly a mix up and just ordered the wrong one. Send it back and have it changed if your bike shop did the order.

  12. Myself and Aaron Browne run Maxxis Holly Rollors on ours. We both find them ok for street and natural, but depending on what PSI you run you would probably run something with a thicker sidewall. I tend to use 60 PSI in mine so it rolls faster and I can feel every bump. If I did comps again which I may do the odd one this year. I'd probably run MAXXIS HIGH rollers F/R in single wall. Just to keep the weight down. I did use a double a few years back on a megamo which felt ok, but I like to save weight these days.

  13. If you want to keep the cost down stick with shimano. I've had plenty of time to experiment on a few different ones, from 4 piston shimano saints new/old calipers and the new zee ones. The only main thing I found why so many people have snapped calipers thinking they were weak isn't the problem. It's down to the amount of force and strength in that area on the back brake. First you need a Fat Hayes disc brake adaptor mount, so it takes away the shock using a 203mm rotor. Once you have this you can run any style in there range. My setup atm is a shimano 4piston zee caliper on the rear, and a Shimano 2piston M506 ( deore ) front. Running the Shimano M506 deore levers in black. I also decided earlier this year to try 2piston on the front to reduce the power, but still keep some bight on the pads. Pads F/R are EBC red pads, always ran them and have been brilliant. Hope that helps
