does anyone know how to get 3D max?
download the demo from autodesk.com
for legal free usage try to find a copy of Autodesk GMax. It's a free version that doesn't include the renderer but does have most of the polygon modelling tools (it's a bit out of date compared to max 2008 but the basics are there) and the interface is basically the same.
that said - if you're wanting decent free modelling software the the PLE version of Maya is more up to date than GMAX and should be a lot easier to find (again - autodesk.com). You might also consider softimage XSI - there's a free version of XSI v4.2 for modding halflife 2 that came out with the game so you should still be able to find that.
Max shits on all the others as far as modelling tools are concerned though

note the 3000-1 contrast ratio and the 2ms response time - oh and the £90 you save
unless you're desparate to run at 1920 x 1200 or absolutely must have a 24" monitor so you can tell your mates you've got one and dont really care about picture quality I'd suggest you don't buy either Dell

You asked that in this thread... And got an answer. Yes, steeper head angles makes for faster steering but that doesn't really make much difference when all you're doing is hopping around. Steeper head angles are better on streetier frames IMO as they're more fun for front wheel/spinny things and the disadvantages (I.e. less good for taps/hooks) are less relevant on that kind of bike.

a half degree difference is surprisingly obvious - at least going between 74.5 and 75 on a bmx.

headangle is about more than reach - you compensate for that by lengthening/shortening the front end - sharper angles mean faster steering
Thats whiy im confused by the slack headangles on the czar etc - surely having more responsive steering would be a good thing for trials (isn't that the reason people like ashtons ?) .

OK... interesting stuff, let's throw some more tests into the mix. Here's something I found about snowboarding...
Cross your arms.
Ok, which elbow is on top? Left? Ride regular.
Right elbow? Ride goofy.
Slide across the kitchen floor in your socks. Which foot first?
Stand straight with your feet at shoulder width. Have someone push you square in the chest... which foot do you put back to balance yourself?
The last one I think could have a lot to do with trials. As you're on your back wheel often... you might use your more stable foot/leg to balance yourself on the bike?
I'm right handed, I kick a ball with my right foot. I ride right foot forward... fair enough. When folding my arms, my left elbow is on top. When pushed backwards I put my left foot back (which fits with this theory!) and I slide across the floor right foot forward (fits as well).
Do these tests work for anyone else?

christ, the fat laptop was intended as a joke but if you look at the cost of the big macbook pro it seems it wasnt that much of a joke at all.
I wouldn't buy one like that personally - That sort of money gets you a proper computer with an 8 core Xeon, 16GB o Ram , SAS hard drives (look it up) and a quadroFX5600 with 1.5GB o memory on it

anyway, here's a few PC based machines
mac price - note it has 2 graphics cards, 2 hard drives and a 20" screen

....which is nearly double the number of available applications to run on it. Still, if you insist on paying out vast sums of money for a substandard PC running a crippled version of freeBSD with a shite GUI that's your business.
back to the original point...
laptops are generally a bit gay if you want to do any serious work, if you want it for web browsing, looking at pictures, writing documents etc. just invest in a decent screen and a massive hard drive above all other features, anything Vista capable will handle your day to day music/photo/porn needs very comfortably.
Don't buy one for playing games - you're better off getting a 350 quid laptop for porn and putting the rest of the money into a desktop for the games - at least you can upgrade the bugger later on.

em is relative to the size of the font inside that object.
People use it for elastic layouts, and to make font sizing work in IE6, and add's about a week of development time onto a normal pixel cut-up site.
oh right - that'll be why it confused me.
what happens if you set the font size and parent element size in em ? my head hurts. I'll go back to building my parametric 3d character creation tool...

actually - I've been pretty happy with my last 2 dell boxes at work (apart from the buzzing noise the new one makes but that goes away if you kick it) I just think their TFT screens are shite and overpriced
