  1. hey, i got back home from university this week and ive been to my local bike shop to ask about changing the bottom bracket and headset from my current frame (the mongoose) to a 2nd hand frame i brought from this forum ages ago. the guy in there has said he'll change everything from my old bike to the new one for £35, but will do a deal if i include my old frame, which is less then 6 months old and hasnt got any dents or major scratches. How much would it be if i sold the frame myself? cheers, dan
  2. hey, im getting a set of hs33s but ive realised i need to buy seperate gear shifters to keep the two chainrings up front and the 8spd cassette at the back. i've seen quite a few trials bikes with gripshifts, but i cant find any that have a short rubber twisting bit (so it doesnt get in the way) and are also compatible with my shimano derallieur(s). can anyone reccomend anything? cheers, dan
  3. ive been riding trials for a few months and ive got a stock bike because it was easier for me to get hold of one and liked the fact they looked more like a normal mountain bike. im not very good at trials but when i tried my friends mod i had more fun on it doing the same moves as i do on my bike, just because it felt more throwable. still not sure if i'd prefer to have a mod though.
  4. the only thing i hate about getting a new bike is when i get my first major scratch or dent, because up till that point you're trying to be real careful when riding and trying to keep it all nice and perfect, but then soon after you just let it get more and more scrapes, and then doesnt look as shiny as it did before! or maybe im alone in saying that!!
  5. instead of using msn, use 'windows messenger'. there might be a problem between either you're interent connection (like i use wireless and my msn hates it) or you're firewall/anti virus settings.
  6. its good, but top gear used to be more about the cars, where the presenters would give constructive and negative critiscm on a car's handling/characteristics etc. but now if jeremy clarkson doesnt like the name (remember the koenigsegg?) then its a crap car. i dont know why im so bothered because i love watching it and find it funny, but you cant really say its a car show anymore, its really about the presenters and the storylines, in which cars are used as props. (like when clarkson was racing the other two presenters somewhere up north in finland, and he was explaining why he chose the mclaren-mercedes slr; its because the producers told him thats what he would be driving and he had to make it fit into the story line somehow!)
  7. top gear is definately good but i cant help but think that over the last few years the producers have missed the point of the show; some of my friends who hate cars love top gear :S
  8. on journeyedeurope.com they have student edition of solidworks on there for under £200 depending on which package you decide on getting. my mate brought it over the summer when he was doing a summer placement. I dont know the difference between the proffesional and student edtion. there didnt seem to be anything major missing from it, so maybe theres just some extra add-ons on the more expensive version.
  9. yeah i do engineering and use solidworks. if you get the right add-ons you can probably simulate different stresses on the frame and find out what'll work and what won't.
  10. the '04 and '05 set are jus different models of hs33's arent they? it says that the 'evolution mounts' are included with the set.
  11. hey guys, as you are all aware, christmas is fast approaching and, like me, you'll probably be asking for trials related presents. i originally wanted to have cable brakes on my bike, just because of the simplicity of it, but to have a set up thats been reccomended by members such as leeds_trials and paul oliver, although i really really want it, is quite expensive. as a result i think im just going to buy maguras, because they're undoubtedly good, but also comparitavely cheaper/same price to avid ultimates and sd7s. i've seen what bikedock are offering(set for £90), but its either the 04 brakes that fir to v-brake mounts, or the 05 set. which set of maguras should i go for? thanks for the help
  12. or if you want to add a bit more style, i reckon you should get one of those real old (beach?) cruisers, like those schwinns; 'cos then you've got an old-granny style bike but with loads more class! thats pretty harsh about you're bike though, its annoying when tw*ts turn up at house partys and just wanna cause hassle; with you're hope hub can't you take it apart, clean and re-grease it? dan
  13. i jus spent the last 5 minutes on paint drawing in the protector but i dont know how to insert images into posts!
  14. my name's dan and im 19. im from hereford but im a student at warwick so term time i live in coventry, so if there are any guys around those two areas gimme a shout. i ride a mongoose dirt jump bike that has had trials-type stuff put on it. music - rock/dance - anything from the 'zane lowe show' or 'dance anthems with dave pearce'!
  15. djb, i like the point you made about landing the derailleur ON to the object you're trying to sidehop on; what if you made the protector so that it's basically a U-shape, with one end so that it attatches to the rear axle/skewer, and then having the other end press against the bottom of you're rear stay, if you see what i mean - in the middle of this U-shape will be you're derailleur. i was studying the picture of the onza saver that maXsteri posted, and i think if one end of the U-shape could attatch to both the rear axle/skewr, and also the point on the rear hanger that the derailleur attatches to, then that should the guard pivoting around (i think!)
  16. hey all, im a 2nd year engineer at warwick and for one of our modules we've been put into groups of five and been told that we have to come up with an idea, research if the product/service is viable and then to draw up a business plan so we can do a sales pitch to our lecturers (Y) anyway, an idea i had was to make some sort of protector for the rear derailleur, because apparantly riders have been known to misperform big sidehops, and then screw up their rear derailleur (i wouldnt know, because i can only sidehop to the left and even then i cant do anything higher then a curb!). i'm sort of thinking along the lines of the sort of guards that you had on your old apollo when you were a kid, although i'm pretty sure you need special mounts on your frame to put them on. does anyone know if these sort of things are actually available, and if not is there a reason why? any feedback or even other ideas i could look into would be great; sorry to all those who thought that when they clicked on this thread they'd have a nice easy post to read through! dan
  17. yeh at the moment the v-brakes on it are just the standard ones that came with it; they're 'promax' ones and i dont think too much off them, even though at the moment theyre doing ok, but thats probably because im still a beginner!
  18. hs33's are undoubtedly good but not what im after; im an absolute beginner and the back wheel so far has been locking up ok, so im going to stick with v-brakes. apparantly a decent v-brake set up can be almost, if not as good as hydraulic brakes (im not intending to start an argument on hydraulic vs. cable brakes here!), and they're less hassle as well
  19. im thinking of replacing the existing v-brakes on my bike and at the moment im thinking of getting the xtr brakes (that 'parallel push linkage' idea seems pretty good), but does anyone have any other suggestions? cheers, dan
  20. a mod is a 20" wheel bike (19" wheel and 1" for the tyre i think) that, when you ride around town, people ask if you can grind anything on it (the fools). a stock bike is a 26" bike and so resembles a mountain bike more closely.
  21. im not to sure about the whole stock vs. mod thing, but at least with a stock bike that has a cassette on the back you can ride around town to different places at a reasonable speed and not get knackered :D
  22. i aint got any clue either mate, but if you look on the 'small random questions thread', page 17, some guy on it (Caleb) thinks the wheelbase is 1020. saying that it could be some completely different ashton theyre talking about!
  23. what make are the carbon boosters? i'm buying an xtr carbon booster from 'the_soon_to_be'; sent him the money and now eagerly waiting for it!!
  24. rideside, do you post on any american trials forums? i remember seeing a post somewhere on t'internet where someone put that link on the post and said that this was his mates website. i checked out the website and there were some pretty good videos, but i reckon its the website name that makes it so cool; 'screwgravity' is a quality address! dan
  25. my 3 year old nike classics - top shoe! :D
