Bunny Hop to Front Tutorial

Inspired by the "How to Hook" thread I was wondering if there were any videos explaining the bunny hop to front. I can do it on a small wall but this is probably only because I already have my front wheel over the edge of the wall and just transfer my weight.

I once knew how to do a pedal up to front but cannot transfer this to bunny hoping to front.

Am I right that I will have to lift the front wheel earlier than when bunny hoping to rear and that I need to jump more forwards rather than upwards? Any tips on that? I can bunny hop rear up to about 1m which, with the right technique, should make me get up even higher with the bunny hop to front.

Ali C (and maybe Dunc Shaw did one too) has a slow-mo instagram post profiling probably the nicest bunny to front technique in the business.

I'd suggest having a look at that.

My written tip is that, similar to the hook topic, you should concentrate aiming for your front wheel right to the edge of the wall, and you need your body over the front wheel. You are probably right that you take off with the front wheel slightly earlier, but it won't be by much.

Had a look at this already. Thanks. I was just wondering about the take off distance and the weight transfer. It's kinda hard to know when to tilt the bike. When bunny hoping, you stay pretty much in the same position until the rear hits the wall.

Edit: Just hat a look at Ali's bunny to front again. It seems as if you stay in the position where the bars touch your hips and then tilt the bike forward.

So I went to the local park and tried doing bunny hops to front on an 80cm wall. I know it's not very high but I feel confident approaching it and it's just about high enough to get the hang of the technique. I counted the attempts. After 256 bunny hops rolling onto the obstacle and hitting into it, I got one done. Pretty happy about this. What I figured after about 100 attempts is that the run up speed for this height doesn't need to be very fast and going slower helps you placing the front wheel. :) What's also pretty interesting is that trying to learn this technique helps you learning tyre taps as you are very likely to hit the edge of the wall with your front wheel trying to place it correctly.
