  1. I've heard that too actually... Older mercs were really well made quality bits of kit but it seems modern Merc's are somewhat lacking in the quality control dept. for some reason... Doesn't mean you pay any less for them of course!

They realised that by cutting some corners they could increase profits by a third! After ending up at the bottom of the JD power survey in the late 90s they've been rebuilding their reputation ever since!

And seriously who compared a ST170 or lower to an RS? £25k vs maybe what 5K + mods? hardly fair. Now compare a modified mk1 Focus RS with a standard new RS, that would be fairer. I'd have the mk1 RS every time!

  2. I read the first 2 posts and thats pretty much all to be said.

There is ways around faster cars and cheap insurance at the same time. To be honest I look at people in modified saxo's, corsa's, fiestas, escys etc and just generaly pitty them.

Modified cars are shit, with the ULTRA GAY lexus lights, speed lines, rediculous exhaust shitty stickers down the sides of the doors, crappy hellfrauds wheels gay fake petrol caps, blue lights and indicators etc. Its all about buying a nice standard car and keeping it that way. I got a 205 gti when I was 18 and fell in love with it, insurance was only £700 quid (because I said it was 1989 instead of 1988, otherwise it was £700 more to insure? The only things I changed on it were just for preformace reasons. Nothing I've done to it can be seen when the bonnets closed except handling things, spaced out wheels and 25mm drop.

If its your first car, just get something really shit, you can stick stickers all over until you cant even tell what colour or car it is. If its not your first car dont get a shit car and shitly modify it. Just get a nice car and leave it nice how its meant to be.

unless its a mk2 golf, then pimp the f**k out it.

    Talk about hypocritical! :D

When will people realise that not all modified cars have been covered in glue and crashed through Halfords.

  3. Just be prepared for immense money flow problems and complete weekends of wanting to beat the living shit out of your car 'cause one snapped bolt has caused a suspension swap to take 3 days instead of 4-5 hours.

haha so true!! I couldn't count the number of times i've blocked the drive with my car up on stands! :D

  4. Depends on your outlook, if you like getting your hands dirty and don't mind spending money that you are unlikely to see again then go for it. If you are more bothered about the finished result and aren't keen on getting stuck in buy a car that has been already modified. Also make sure you're not impulsive, there's no quicker way to lose money than to modify a car then sell it on and start over. The only reason i'm ploughing money into my car is that I know i'm not going to get bored any time soon.

  5. I'm lost...

Sorry bit cryptic, i'll translate :D The 5 turbo that was on track at RWS went bang. Last year there were two cars, this year just one. Awesome beast though, it did a 360 directly in front of us on the way out of Copse.

  6. Its great, you get to see some of the worlds shittest cars crash into each other, i thoroughly enjoyed myself last year

What's shit about the 5 turbos, clio cups and megane trophys? Agreed on the single seaters though.

Jarrod: You hear that the 5 turbos engine went pop? Only one this year too, used to be two.

  7. You'll still be lurking the forums...

To be honest, I thought you stopped riding ages ago! Not sure why...

Naah, i've been riding just with very little effort and no further than town :D

I couldn't turn my back on T-F for good, still feels like the end of an era for me though :(

  8. Well i've finally done it. After about 9 months of no use, and about 2 years of very little use i've sold up. A very sad day for me but it just wasn't getting used. Just wanted to say thanks to Danny and Tom for this amazing site and to all the great people i've met over the years, those few that aren't here now and those that I never got round to meeting. Bye bye trials bike!

On the plus side I can finally finish off my supercharged engine build. So those that frequent the car thread will still see me about.

  9. I broke mine ages ago on a 4x track, they told me 4-6 weeks to get back to normal, i'd say at least 8-10 before you start trials again. I remember trying a pedal hop when I thought I was ok again, almost passed out with the pain, i reckon that set my recovery back a good few weeks too lol

  10. What makes people get a 106 Rallye over a GTI?

I realize the issue with the stereotypical views on 106 GTIs being a little chavtastic, and its bloody hard to find a half decent used one (that hasn't been kitted 'n' shitted and/or done about 125k), but the quoted 0-60 time on a rallye being just under three and a half seconds slower that that of a GTI, and the quoted BHP for a rallye is 90 as compared with the GTI's 120... I realize, standard, its 55kgs lighter, but surely the extra umph makes up for the slight weight gain? Not to mention an average rallye costing more than an average GTI...

I also realize, that hands down the Rallye's are cooler just because they aren't chav central but I'm just curious as to what makes you Rallye owners tick?

To me the Rallye's are special, very few imported and very distinctive compared to the Gti's. They also attract enthusiast owners and put off chavs because on paper they don't compare to the gtis. In reality though, there's not much in it!

Oh and nice work Mr Scott! What's next on the to do list? :P

  11. Why the need for that Simon? It's a known fact that the saxo and 106 share the same chassis and suspension. Clarkson even voted the 106 Gti the second best handling car in the world, claiming it was better than an S1 elise

Just because it looks like a f**king train wreck doesn't mean it wont handle well. Sure, the wheels are clearly too big, but it's still likely to be pretty good. Anything with that power is bound to have some decent shocks/springs behind it at the very least.

My only comment would be that the front brakes look a little on the small side for something with 300+ bhp!

You're just bitter because your Jap box is broken

    Again :P

Standard Gti 247mm brakes by the looks of things, scary with that much power.

What's the spec? 350-380bhp at the fly is big ask of even a charged J4 lump.

  12. Cheers mate :)

No anyone thats selling any springs?

Just sold a set literally yesterday lol.

Check out the Rallye Register, bound to be some on there. Alternatively if you can brave the chavvyness there will definately be some on 106 Owners.

  13. You getting coilovers or springs?

Anybody know how much different coilovers make handling and feel wise, had 40mm lowering springs on my last car and they did f**k all apart from make it stiffer.

Tha main advantage of coilovers on Saxo/106's is the height adjustability other than that there's no advantage unless you are wanting to run much stiffer springs which is only necessary on a track car.

For the last year i've been running Bilstein Sprintline shocks and Faulkner 155lb springs (about -35mm) and would highly recommend it as a setup for fast road/the odd trackday. I didn't notice it being too much stiffer over the bumps or too uncomfy but when you put your foot down and really hurled it into a corner the difference was amazing. Dampers are about £290ish new and springs about £70.
