One of my friends has an 08 Yaabaa 499 and he runs a vee on smooth rim with thin Inspired V-Pads. I weigh 8 stone and i can hop on the back wheel as hard as i can and the brakes don't even slip a millimetre. So its vee's for me. EDIT: His brakes feel smoother than a water bleed and you don't need any tar and they don't stick.
I know a couple of people that had rockman greens on smooth rims and both of them said that they were rubbish. One of my friends has V!Z HS33 pads (the £15.66 ones not spanish fly) and they have the best hold ever!
I've seen throught the forum that Try-All Stiky's are only good on the front. But if you use something like maxxis high roller, Continental rain king etc, you won't have to worry about your tyres wearing down every week!
First tip: Get a new bike. Second tip: Start with normal hops on the back wheel. Third tip: Once you can pedal hop try doing drops. After that do what ever you wan't. Thats how i learnt to do things (apart form the new bike bit).
