  1. Right, I work in civil engineering and for obvious reasons want to get qualified. Courses usually state 'Minimum of three grade C's at A2 or equivilent' but what if you don't have that? I've got average GCSE's and an NVQ level 2 in engineering but i don't think that counts for as much as A-levels, so can anyone who is or has been in a similar situation clarify things a bit. I'm probably looking at doing a HND or BSc at Westmister, seems about the only nearby place doing construction engineering courses. Would it be worth contacting them direct?
  2. Just take it easy at the end of your journey like most turbo owners do
  3. Not got a picture, but i have a Howies 'How is my riding?' top signed by loads of trials riders/DHers from bike 2002 (think it was 02 anyway), thats pretty rad. Mega old-skool too!
  4. Yeah i could, but the longer i make it to clear the 'ring then the more likely it is to get bent. I'd rather just get one that fits before f**king with it, i didn't spend £20 to make it myself
  5. I've just bought a DMR Chain cage for my DMR play bike (trailstar), im running truvativ hussefelt cranks and a middleburn chainring and when i fitted the DMR chain cage it didnt reach out far enough to clear the outside of the chainring. Is it just a case of it not fitting with those cranks? If so i'll just send it back. Cheers, Tom.

    Carbon Calculator

I was expecting to see a carbon fibre calculator. I quite wanted one of those.
  7. Mostly if you're over 21 or 25, and it has to be stated on your certificate of motor insurance. And wether its the company insurance or not, the insurance covers the driver, so if the driver isnt covered then that's that.
  8. I'll agree theyre not perfect, but different ones are used in different types of area (ie whether its part of a link road, or just residential access..), which i guess the council would label with some kind of priority for emercency access. Planning regs stipulate for fire access, the bod at the council who approves the design would be responsible for any other matter regarding their placement. I could go further, but i'd start needing diagrams, or VERY long explanations, and i really can't be bothered anymore. Everyone should drive within the law, end of. We shouldnt need cameras, we shouldnt need speed bumps, we should be trusted with our own and everyone elses safety while driving, It's really not hard, it's just not done.
  9. Not that it was me who bought it up - but as i did discuss it: All traffic calming measure are designed to accommodate emergency services vehicles, like keeping a 3.6m winimum width for fire vehicles etc.
  10. But to check the picture it would need to have taken one, and how does radar know if you're wearing a seatbelt? 'doing 40 in a 40' doesnt make you the kind of person to speed at all, speed limits arent just limits, theyre also suggested speeds, things like that are big factors in keeping traffic flowing. And if you cant see how going faster makes people more likely to die in the event of an accident, then you're evidently not too bright. 40mph insteads of 30mph is a 33% increase, whhich is a fairly big leap. And as Tomm said, its not about stopping from that speed (although that obviously helps) what its saying is if you hit someone at 30 this will happen, if you hit someone at 40 that will happen. As for blind spots, if you cant see the road ahead enough to judge the situation, slow down. Roads arent designed to drive at the speed limit for every inch of the road. Why the hell do people these days rely on everything but their own basic judgement to get them through such simple things in life?
  11. How would a speed camera know hes not wearing a seatbelt? Unless it was a manned camera, in which case theres usually a car further up the road to pull them over.
  12. But if you go past a camera too fast, you get a measely £60 fine and 3 points which counts for nothing. Various other restrictions mean you have to stop to see if its safe, have to slow down in case of oncoming traffic etc.. they add personal risk, and therefore a responsibility to ensure your own safety through the knowledge that you can't judge the road ahead without taking a slower/more calculated approach. But i do agree, cameras work on larger carriageways and the more common bump, humps and narrowing for resi roads, but i've seen other traffic calming measure used pretty effectively on dual carriageways too, on approaches to roundabouts and the like. As for the majority of cameras not being in resi areas... you'd be surprised. A large number of cameras are used near schools, housing developments, and all sorts of areas where a camera isn't the only option.
  13. Hence my reference to resi areas... And there are more ways of traffic calming than road humps.
  14. But thats down to the driver though. Pound for pound, theyre much more effective at slowing traffic down providing theyre suitable for the area theyre being placed. I work for a planning/civils company and roads designed to calm traffic to specified speeds (albeit in mainly resi areas where i work) are much more consistant at reducing speeds as opposed to a long straight bit of road with a gatso halfway down it.
  15. Speed humps are a much more consistent way of traffic calming, they're just not always suitable. May i also add, that i can gaurantee you'll change your opinion on speeding traffic when you have your inevitable close encounters on your hairdryer.

    Name A Band

Im checking out the new Darkest Hour album (been leaked) and its fffuuuuuuucking siiiick!
  17. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy a bit of 'spirited' driving, but any car enthusiast will agree with me that they're not so bad. Theres a time and a place for driving like a loon, and if theres a speed camera down a piece of road, you can sure as hell take a good guess that that's not the place. It's only people who don't pay attention and get caught out that are bitter about it. IMO the more people driving around with 11 points on their licence the better, it'll slow them all down a helluva lot.
  18. Not being funny, but your profilw says you're 16, so why does this worry you? And even if you were older, if you didn't speed you also wouldn't be affected. I dont think they should be banned, but they should definitely be backed up by more traffic cops.
  19. Rip the audio from the youtube?

  21. A good tip i was given once, dont start every bloody sentence with 'I'. It's pretty hard but sounds better to read through, less list like.
