It does work. If you lace the wheel on the disc side with all 'heads out' that gives enough clearance.

Nah, just lace it correctly 'Red' spoke should be in 'blue' position (and then all the spokes on that side of the hub need to go round the rim the same distance). Easiest way is to re-lace....

Means you've laced it wrong... One side of spokes is one hole 'out' in relation to the other side. Check the lacing again, right from the first spoke. Usually easier to strip it and start again

Or Continental Risky chain length? Axle has as much contact with the dropouts as it would 'normally' I think...
