  1. Got a question regarding a rod, the inner is steel, and its surrounded by an outer sleeve of brass. How do I go working out stresses + strains of it?

Thought Id ask tonight incase anyone on here knows, if not Ill go see the lecturer tomoz

    cheers :)

BTW im not stupid, I know how to do it on homogenous materials, just composites confuse me...

It's something about things I think were called compatibility equations - if the rod is fixed at both ends then you know the strain will be the same in both of them. Therefore if you know the load applied you can work out the extension by working out some sort of combined force extension relationship for the two of them. Once you know that the strain you can work out the stress in each part of the rod (i assume you're not doing Poisson's ratio stuff at the moment?).

  2. If you're buying a computer for your mum i'd go with getting a ready built - it might be much cheaper to build one yourself or buy off ebay, but there's much better peace of mind buying from a big company, plus if it goes wrong you can just tell them to fix it. I say this after having to give remote computer support to parents after building them a computer while I was at uni. If you're mum's not computer savvy it's much easier for them to have one where you can pretty much guarantee that if something has gone wrong it's either your mum's fault and is fixable, or is the manufacturers fault and they'll fix it for you.

  3. Cheers guys - got woken up by it and wondered what the hell was going on so looked on google for anything about it then thought "I know - I'll check Trials-Forum". Glad to know it's not just in my head.

  4. Could you please fill this in for me :) its for my college coursework

    cheers guys and girls (Y)

    1. Do you watch documentaries?

    Yes

    2. Would you make time to watch one if an interesting topic was being featured?

    Yes

    3. Would a documentary about an extreme sport interest you?

    Yes

    4. When watching a documentary do you prefer to see a lot of ‘action’ footage and then some explanation of what’s been happening, or loads of talking then a little bit of action?

Depends on the topic and whether i'm trying to learn about it or just watching it for fun. Probably prefer mostly action footage.

    5. If you were too look for a video on the internet where would you be more likely to go for it?

    Youtube

  5. red white and yellow are just RGB, not component. (RGB is like component for SCART but it's not the same as actual component cables which are the RGB equivalent of HDMI i think)

yeh i confused myself a little there as-well....

anyway, i think the DVD-->SCART-->HDTV will look alright, maybe above average depending on your dvd player.

the PS2-->RGB-->HDTV i would expect to look pretty dire, but it'll still be playable, just not very pretty to look at.

if you are getting a flat panel anyway, then you might as-well get a HDTV one as it will look exactly the same as a standard one.

Red white and yellow are composite cables: the yellow takes the video signal and the red and white deal with the two channels of stereo sound (can't remember which is which).

Component is different and uses three cables purely to carry the video signal splitting it up something along the lines of the amount of red, the amount of blue, and the brightness of the picture, which can be recombined to give a proper picture. Component video is capable of transmitting a high def signal.

I think it may be quite similar to the rgb used in scart, but scart has extra pins which can also do composite video, and sound if i remember right.

  6. lol do it! Scrum broke in our shed, and somehow my dad ended up with alot more (and alot better) tools than he had in the first place lol.

    Woopie doo

and that's one reason why insurance costs keep going up. cool.

  7. I've found Altec Lansing to have a really clear sound. Not hugely expensive like other upmarket brands too.

    another vote for Altec Lansing

and is it worth getting a setup of 2 speakers and a sub? you get the clarity from the mids then, without them straining to deliver bass as well?

    Smithy

I think you may have missed the point slightly unless altec lansing make passive speakers to be powered by a stereo amp

Personally I am quite a fan of the Eltax monitor IIIs from Richer Sounds The Tannoys look quite nice as well, but if you go somewhere like Superfi you can take your amp along and with a bit of luck they'll let you try the speakers out with your amp to see how they sound before you buy. Kudos to you for buying NAD btw - i'm a fan :)

    Edit:

alright they do make proper stereo speakers but it's not what you meant is it?

  8. Right folks - i've just heard a tune on Scott Mills floorfillers called "it feels like home" and i think it's by someone called Mack. I can't find it and it had a great sample from an old dance tune. Can anybody tell me if i've got the name right?

    Cheers,

    Andy

  9. [long boring explanation] I've started a PhD on micro holographic Particle Image Velocimetry (uPIV) which is pretty much photographing fluid flows which have tracer particles in which are illuminated by a laser (the object beam). In order to get a hologram you shine a second laser beam called a reference beam onto the ccd. The two beams interfere with each other and from the way the interference pattern looks you can work out where the particles are in 3d space with one photograph. You do the same again and you can get 3 component 3 dimensional data for fluid flow characteristics within the measurement volume. The more accurate the data I get out the better the results will be.[/long boring explanation]

And I want to know how they work

  10. Right folks, this is a bit of a long shot but i've got the use of a Nikon D50 camera at uni and it can take photos in .nef format. I've found out as much as that it's a raw format which records the data from each pixel in the ccd without losing any of the data, but i want a way to view the individual values of brightness for each pixel. I've tried opening a file in notepad but there's not a whole lot of help there.

Can anyone suggest a program that will allow me to read the .nef into some sort of array with a single cell for each pixel? or failing that any other way to interrogate the file.

    Cheers,

    Andy
