Now then folks, having recently killed my venerable old maxtor 30 gig IDE drive, I have replaced it with a new 36 gig Western Digital SATA drive which I intend to install windows on. I will be using a 160 gig Maxtor SATA drive as a documents drive. Now here comes the question: I have an MSI K8T Neo FIS2R motherboard which has the capacity to run 4 SATA devices, or so I understand, using the VIA VT8237 southbridge which accepts two, and the Promise 20378 chipset. Can you suggest the best way to plug my drives in to get the best performance out of the computer.

If you're not sure, then this might help: The two best engineers on our course at uni left school at sixteen and did a modern apprenticeship which got them a HND or HNC (or both, can't remember exactly) but they decided after four years or so that the job wasn't taking them where they wanted to be in life. They applied to Loughborough and got in on the back of their practical qualifications. They're both currently on a first average, and despite being a couple of years older than most of us, fit in really well, though their capacity for booze probably helps in this. So the basic message is don't worry - you can change tracks if you feel that you've picked the wrong one, and if you go the way they did then you'll have a much better grounding in the subject than I do after doing Maths, Physics and DT at 6th form.

P.S. Best of luck with making your choice - either will get you into a nice, lucrative and well respected job eventually. Or you could even train up to be an engineer, and use that qualification as a proof of your intelligence to get pretty much any job that a media studies student hasn't a hope of getting (so you're probably going to be unable to get a career at McD's cos they'll all have gone).

You didn't say whether the force was applied to the object or not so it could be existing in a weird kind of meta-force quasi-real bollocks state whereby it has infinitely small area and can therefore pass between the atoms of the immoveable object. Or I could be wrong again because there is no such thing as an immoveable object or unstoppable force. As i write, the earth is vibrating slightly with every keystroke i make to compensate.

To be fair i would like to think that the people who i know and have met on this forum as having more compassion and brains to realise that not stopping after hitting someone is a stupid and heartless action.
Ive been puzzled lately over something else.... to do with car insurance. Like ive said earlier ive been driving now for over 2 years, no claims nothing and the 1.6 civic insured under my name. The car is a category 9 or 10 if i remember correctly. However ive got my heart set on bigger things.. a civic type r. My insurance at the minute is in the ££££'s and im planning on taking pass plus to try and cut down on the bill.
Anyways back to the point just wondering, why can people pick up an autotrader buy a 2 litre+ car insure it, drive it about and everything when they are atleast a year younger than me and the car costing a fraction for what i paid for mine. But when i ask about gettin insurance for a civic type R i get laughed at by companies.
Surely something that costs as standard £16000 is not comparable to someone who paid £2000 on something with a bigger engine and older.. Ok im probably not being too clear what im trying to say is.. how come i cant get insured on something thats 2 litre (200bhp) when people drive 2 litre turbo's etc with well over 200bhp.. and are my age or even less. I just dont get how it works at all.. someone please state the obvious
The people round my way with nice cars are the ones who haven't bothered to go to uni and have been working since 16/18, are still living at home and pay no rent. It goes without saying that they probably aren't concerning themselves with saving up for a house deposit or owt like that, and so treat their 16k or so wage as disposable income, hence stupid price insurance for a fast old car doesn't really bother them... Not that i'm bitter or anything :-
By the way - Mr pissin' on the fence, i didn't realise my post count was so high, after all I have only been using this place for three years. I suppose my posts would contain much better content were my post count in the tens of thousands by your logic then?

My monitor is the Iiyama E431S. Spent ages looking for it at Easter as they'd gone out of production. according to the website, they've brought them back due to popular demand. The E431s and E481s look the nicest of any TFT monitors on the market in my opinion, especially in black or beige. I'm not so keen on the silver one as it looks a tad plasticky (as in much like all the other monitors on the market). Anyway, they have a dvi in and a vga in. The vga in works perfectly well for me, and i've not yet had chance to test the dvi in.
I highly recommend it, or it's little brother the E430s if it's still about.

something like this would do fine. 30 watts per channel doesn't sound like much when you're used to seeing the outputs given at places like Comet, but trust me it would do you fine. I have an old Marantz pm-35 amp with 35 watts per channel driving my speakers, and i've never turned the volume past half way cos it starts to hurt.
Then all you need is a 3.5mm jack to dual phono cable to connect the jobbies.

Wow.... I finished it in 8 hours.....wow....it rocks!! the ending made me cry (Y) but that's only cos I'm a retard...
And the reason I said I'd read War and Peace is cos we're studying it in English for GCSE, and we've been advised to read it, but to be frank I couldn't be arsed....but other people have suggested it now, so I decided to give it a go.....

Don't bother with War and Peace. All it is, is a fairly decent novel, but with interludes of Tolstoy ranting about whatever he feels like at the time, which is usually something to do with the way history was recorded and the fact that we make heroes out of people.

My point is that any silence is only a token gesture, and as such serves only to ease people's conscience so that they may feel 'yes, i am really doing something to help' when in actual fact real help is the one thing they are not prepared to give.
I think the second world war would be a lot harder to forget since almost anyone in our generation has had long term contact with either a parent or grandparent who lost friends or relatives. The second world war shaped the way our entire existence is. All the tragic events in London will do is possibly tighten the security in England. How much exactly did the Madrid episode really affect the way you live?

This two minutes silence thing actually pissed me off somewhat today. How is an enforced silence going to a) bring back the people who were killed by the murdering criminals or ease the pain of the families, and b ) prevent it from happening again. I can see the other side of the argument where people who would not otherwise have the events of last thursday at the forefront of their mind had it brought to their attention, but as I was actually in the queue for lunch, my immediate thought was that I was hungry and I could see it on the faces of everyone else. The only real worthwhile thing to do to commemorate the victims is to take a real active part in preventing it from happening again. This is something that I, and I believe all of you, will not have the time or the inclination to do. Therefore I say let the loved ones of those killed mourn their loss in private, anything else is only to make ourselves feel better.

it can and does... without going into too much crazy physics, you need to watch a golf ball being hit in slow motion, the the head of the club remains pretty much at a constant speed yet after only milliseconds the ball is a good few foot away from the face... the ball does travel faster than the club headtom
Again without going into too much crazy physics but acknowledging conservation of energy, the club head has to slow down by a significant amount as soon as it hits the ball, otherwise how would you feel that you had hit the ball. Admittedly, the ball would kind of spring away from the club head, and accelerateaway from it but only whilst club face and ball were returning to normal shape, and it would stop as soon as they lost contact. I can't get my head round the wobbling thing after it leaves the club yet but can kind of see it.

Imagine you have a balloon... make an 'O' with your forefinger and thumb, and then try and pull the knot of the balloon through that 'O'. Then let go. Very similar type of thing with the golf ball - the deformed part of the ball 'catches up' and can make the whole thing change speed.
does the front of the golf ball flatten as well, or just the bit which hits the golf club?

Most non-freshers live off campus, so it doesn't get too claustrophobic thankfully. There's a few decent clubs in town anyway if you don't fancy the union, but the campus is so big it doesn't really have the chance to get annoying.

Yup it is one of the raptors - thought i'd give it a try.
One last noobie question: The only other drive i'll be connecting is an IDE DVD writer. Will it just confuse the computer putting that on the slot on the southbridge as well do you reckon?
