Hub Exploded

Earlier today I was out on a ride, I went to gap and as soon as I was on my rear wheel, the hub axle snapped. Part of the hub was also bent so much it couldn't be used again. Looks like it's new hub time.....

I was wondering if anyone has any idea why it happened? I will get some pics on soon :)

Edit: Pics on

Ah, it is just a hollow 10mm threaded axle. You will likely be able to get something suitable from your local bike shop. Or even a halfords store. Mabye get a solid one with nuts on the end instead of a hollow one though as it will be abit tougher. Doesn't have to be new hub time.

But the circular thing on the inside of the axle (don't know what it's called) is major bent. When I looked at axles online they don't sell those things?

I'm sure if you went to a bike shop they will have one that will fit. There can't be that many different sizes.

Hmm, £20 for a new axle or £29 for the same hub with sealed bearings...

Is it even a choice?

From what I heard, your cranks wouldn't spin, you tightened the cones and it exploded, yes?

Well sounds to me like your wheel wouldn't turn because your cones were already too tight, then it was so tight it went BOOM. Just a theory.

It could be possible, but I'd have to get some extra bearing races.

The wheel would turn fine, and the cranks were stiff but we sorted that, the wheel and cranks were turning fine, then boom.

right? thanks for sharing that with me.

You said I should get a new spindle, and for the extra £9 a hub is, I think it's worth it.

Just thought I would add this - Connor was the one who tightened your cones, but I thought cones were easy to fix and you could do them yourself?

I didn't ask him to do it. He just whipped the spanner out and tightened them.

Going to have to agree with what kieran just said there fraser. You said cones aren't hard to tighten to darren but yet somehow connor deans had to tighten yours today?<_<

I didn't ask him to do it. He just whipped the spanner out and tightened them.

I dont know what bearing races are but im pretty sure hubs dont just explode. I think it would have had something to do with your cones because they dont stop getting tightened when we ride.

And how did you get the cranks to stop being stiff?
