People with some idea about electronics

Greetings

I fried a GoPro Black a week ago after some salt water got inside. It's completely shot but after taking a look at the printed circuit board, I started wondering whether the black patches are supposed to be on the board or are a result of the short circuit. If that's what caused it, what is the black stuff around the chips and transistors? Is it molten/burnt plastic or some sort of transistor material? I find it surprising that the temperature would be so high as to actually burn the board.

top right corner? it seems like burnt glue

shorts circuits can be bitches and they can create high temps temporary

Transistor material= silicone and plastic insulating body

btw it has a sexy board

ohh thooooose black patches thats around loads of components on the middle too!

seems like glue, for heat transferring and/or EMI

The black stuff is a potting compound used for heat dissipation as well as strength and anti vibration.

From memory the top right corner of the board in the picture is closest to the terminals of the battery so it wouldn't surprise me if the heat generated when the battery shorted has damaged the transistors/melted the compound.

Thanks guys, mystery solved :)

Yeah if anything, that's the area of the board which looks cooked. The potting compound there is porous and uneven.
