Echo Pure 2013 .... I think

James Heaton

Recommended Posts

Just bought a used Echo Pure after a 15 year break from trials 😂. I believe it is the 2013 model but could be 2011/12? Condition is almost new with just a couple of small marks. I'm hoping the trials community may be able to make some recommendations for a new front brake as the Clarks one just doesn't seem to have the stopping power. Also a front and rear tyre recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Apart from that I just plan to take things slow and build my confidence back up but most of all enjoy it as that's what it's all about!

Welcome back  I recently did the same myself and loving it!

The bike looks very nice, all depends on your budget, I went for an Avid BB7 with organic pads and it's been great for me.

Other member may recommend Hope, Magura's or Hayes, you might be lucky in the sales section.

Thanks for the reply. Great to hear you are back riding. It’s funny you mention the Avid BB7 as I used an Avid cable disk brake prior to stopping riding some years ago and it was very reliable. Do you have an idea what rota size would be best (or would fit)? 180mm or 200mm?

Rotor size to an extent is personal preference, I went for 180mm as that’s what I was advised to get.

It’s a TMS Silex 24 I’m riding.

Although 7 inch rotor would do you very well, bigger the better, I would recommend an 8 inches if you can get one.

Avid BB7 is very good: organic pads or Trialtech/Jitsie pads, Odyssey Linear Cable, and Avid Speed Dial 7 or a Shimano T780 Brake lever would do you good

Or

Shimano Saint M820 with an 8 inch rotor is what I have now. It is amazing as well.

I have another local rider with a Sram Code RSC, which works well too (with a bit more modulation than Shimano Saint)

Thanks for all that. It’s really helpful. You’ve got to see from my point of view when I was riding trials regularly 15 years ago, I was up to date with what works well and where my money was best spent. Now however I’m unaware about all these new brands and what people are using these days or what products are working best. I’ll drop an update when I make the purchase. I think I’m going to go Avid BB7 with 200mm (8 inch) rota and SD7 lever. As for the pads, it’s really a stab in the dark for me so maybe go with the Organic pads.

Any tyre recommendations would be greatly appreciated also. Thanks.

Thanks for the pad link mate, I’ve just ordered some. I’m going with the BB7 200mm and SD7 lever in the end. I’ll let you know how I get on.

TMS? I’ve just had to google that as I’m not familiar with them. They look really nice and clean. Had a look on your profile for a picture but couldn’t find one.

I went for the Avid FR-5 levers as was worried about the small dial being easy to break on the SD7.

Cool, Odyssey Linear SLS brake cables work very well if you’re planning on foot jam whips. If not, Shimano SP51 outer cables are meant to give a solid feeling brake:

TMS is a French brand available through FXN, the Silex is steel, I’ve always loved the feel of steel frames coming from a bmx background:

Hi!

Got a similar brake setup: BB7, Odyssey Linear Slick cable, organic pads but Avid Speed Dial 7 levers.

I prefer the SD7 lever cause the leverage can be adjusted and it seems to me, that it could be set higher, resulting in more power but a spongier feel.

I run Shimano RT66 rotors in 180mm front and 160mm rear.

It works quite well!  Recently I was missing some power on the front but I guess my brake pads are slightly contaminated.

I really like the BB7, I like the low maintenance. My Shimano Zee or the Magura MT7 of a friend required constant attention, it is annoying.

Jistie has some trial specific brake pads for the BB7. I did not try them, but I would like too.

You can find them on tartybikes

Trial specific brake pads deliver generally much more power.

Sounds like I need to try the SD7 levers.

I wasn't aware of the Jitsie pads, I'll try them at some point

Welcome back dude 👍

The bike looks great. Recommend a BB7 too. Tried shimano zee, Maguras and shiguras (Magura caliper and Shimano lever) The maintenance is just annoying.

Change those bars next.

Mike! It’s been a long time! I spoke to Tim and he told me you were still riding albeit a few thousand miles over the pond. That’s proper dedication that 😛

Great to see you are still making videos too. I’m extremely rusty but I hope you’ll consider me for a roll in the latest Damnation 😮‍💨😂

I’ve ordered the Jitsie pads for the BB7. Will let you know how they are in the coming week or so 🙂

Looks stunning mate. Really nice colour combo. I got the sp51 outer cable as I was putting in an order with tarty and was in stock 👍 and don’t worry there is no chance of me doing foot jam whips 😆
