In halls of residence you're meant to have your own individual TV licence. I think if you have only a portable TV then it might be covered by your parent's licence. I never bothered, and neither did any of my friends and no-one got shafted. The TV licence people would never have been able to get in anyway...

In halls of residence yes you do need individual tv licences as well as one for the tv in the communal area as all the doors have locks on and are classed as flats. I didn't even bother with a tv i just watched the one in the kitchen and used the 10meg connection to download a shed load :P

So in effect you need two licences? One for your room and one for the communal area that's spiggin ridiculous, TV licence peeps.

The way the detection vans work anyway is by re-radiation from the aerial, which, when connected to a central feed, could be anybody.

By the way you need a TV licence for anything capable of receiving a TV signal unless it has been de-tuned (i.e TV with no aerial, not tuned and you only use to play vids on) or is powered completly by it's own internal batteries. Or, at least, that's my understanding.
