Help With My Bike Building?

Recommended Posts

I am putting together my new bike as we speak. It has disc breaks, and when I spin the front wheel, though there is no noticeable friction, it makes a slight noise like light pads rubbing. Is this normal before the breaks set in? PLEASE HELP ASAP! I am so very excited, but I don't want to go ride without making sure it is alright to do so. Thanks everyone!

Your building your bike at 1.30 in the morning? Your crazy.

Anway as for the pads, just adjust them a little bit, maybe release the TPA. If you can't be bothered, then it'll be totally fine to ride, some people just get abit annoyed when their bike isn't running totally smooth. If you aren't one of those guys then just ride and ignore the noise.

He's in america :P

A little pad rub here and there isn't a problem with discs. Its nice to not have the annoying high pitch whine every wheel rotation, but its not harmful. Most times i go riding with my mates its a case of who's disc isn't whining.

Sometimes the disc can be slightly skewed, even the ones you buy new.. you can try to bend it a bit.. just be careful so you don't overbend it and use some paper when you do it, never touch the disc with dirty hands! If the sound is very vague, it'll probably tune down after riding your bike for a while, since the disc will get worn.

is it a cable or hydraulic disc?

do you know the model, because different disc brakes have different ways of adjusting the pads and how close they are to the disc etc.

if its a constant rubbing it might be to do with pad alignment and if its one rub per revolution it may be a slightly bent or off-true disc, these can be very carefully bent or spaced with very thin washers where it bolts onto the hub.

cheers sam
