It unscrews, see the ODNU bit written on it, theres an arrow pointing to the left in a clockwise motion. Undo it that way. Use either: Needlenose pliers or hammer and drift or pin spanner or whatever you can fit in there to turn it with.

I've always thought its to do with the threads on the crank not being 100% square to the arm, giving it a side to aide and maybe up and down wobble.

Yeah theres nothing stopping you... Just make sure they have the same internal diameters (and external if you wanna use an olive on the end) and make sure they're not really soft/flexible or the barb might pop out.

The most freerunning I've ever done is jumping up the 3 steps in my house, but I seem to see lots of them wearing New Balance shoes if thats any help.

If that is aimed at me, I ran an Echo '07 for a while before the Try-All and dented it once, but that was it. I guess I should ride harder...
