tar off the roads doesnt do much good, roofing tar is what you want tar basically makes the pads stick better to the rim, increasing friction and braking power. a grind is where you use a angle grind and skim the grinding disc along the rim. this increases the surface area that the pads bite into making the brake more powerfull.

thats when i put a really shit one on, even then it stays on for a month or so.
