  1. I work in decathlon a workshop so get to see what is and isn't good by what gets brought in for repair. We don't often hear of any or get any in so I guess that's a good thing!

Decathlon bikes best selling point is value for money. They have some nice features at this price point like oversized bars, disc brakes, deore mech I believe ect ect.

Only think I would say is its good to have an idea with this bike how mechanical disc brakes function. Set up right they can be awesome but they do need a bit of attention every now and then to keep then that way. But if you know what you're doing which I'm guessing you will it wouldn't be a problem.

Duncy, what are the sizes like? These have gone down to £350 so I'm hovering over the buy button.

Trying to decide whether to get medium or large. Are the large ones like... ridiculous "tesco bike" large? Tempted to go for medium because I prefer the look of smaller bikes but I'm 6'2. What size do you reckon the one in the photo is here? http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-500-s-mountain-bike-black-id_8208677.html

  2. They are amazingly good value for money, obviously the parts aren't as good as the equivalent price hard tails but they aren't far off! The frames are sound, I had the previous one and really liked it apart from I wanted a smaller frame and my giant came along cheap so I grabbed that. I checked out the new version last time I went to decathlon, looks better made/designed so I'd assume it feels even better than the one I had. I'm going near there today so could test ride one potentially and let you know?

If you're going past that would be cool but don't go out of your way on my account, I think what you've already said is enough for me, I'm on the edge of buying it anyway :) £360 doesn't seem to get you much in terms of branded bikes nowadays, even second hand so it seems like it's worth a punt. Size wise I think I might get a medium, I should probably grow up and get a bike that fits me properly (I'm 6 2) but large frames look a bit weird to me, fashion over function..

Duncy, I was a bit surprised the brakes are even branded, was expecting something unbranded for the price. I have a couple of avid bb7's so I'll probably put those on (no idea if they're still regarded as being any good :S) if they're not up to scratch. And maybe some new forks (I guess the unbranded ones weigh a bit).... and maybe a shorter stem.. and an electric bike kit... this could end up costing me but it's been a few years since I blew a load of money on bike bits :)

  3. *bump* (this is one of those weird times I'm googling for stuff and TF comes up in the results)

Looking at this at the moment:

    http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-500-s-mountain-bike-black-id_8208677.html

Anyone got one or know someone who does? Got any thoughts CurtisRider? I'm not too fussed about the components as long as the frame is up to the job, I'm not going to be doing anything crazy on it :)

Eventually to convert to electric I think (I'm hopefully moving house to somewhere about 1.5 miles from the pub, all uphill on the way back, but there's an off road route I can take).

The other option seems to be this: http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-520-s-mountain-bike--id_8208678.html. But to be honest I prefer the look of the cheaper one :/

  4. Yeah, going pretty good at the moment :)

Bit of a rocky start but I guess that's normal. Things seem to be steadying out a bit. I've been working on a slideshow plugin for WordPress for a year now. Not a bad way to make a living: no clients to deal with, working from home, could be worse!

  5. I guess I might count as a lurker, it's been a while since I posted.

I've been super busy with work for about the past year. And going to the allotment (getting old!) :)

  6. Yep, what ooo said. Although.. I would argue, that the extra skills you might learn using something like trigger.io are at least transferrable to web stuff, and Java is a lot harder to get into. Depends how serious you are, if you're just dabbling, I'd go for trigger.io - it'll be easier to get something up and running. but If you actually intend on releasing something on the play store, then do it properly (Java).

And yep you need a Mac to develop for iOS, that's why I bought one, although I havent done any iPhone development yet. My brain isn't ready to learn new languages yet. Its still recovering from the shock of 4 years of java - which I hated towards the end.

  7. Java and JavaScript are quite different. If you're happy with HTML, JavaScript etc, maybe take a look at trigger.io, phone gap or appcellerator to begin with. Trigger.io is probably the easiest to set up and get working.

  8. 58 miles, twice a day.. 5 times a week.. 812 miles. By my workings thats £81.20 a week, your car must to 5 miles to the gallon or something :P It might end up cheaper over the course of 3 months to buy a more economical car, rather than spend that money on rent.

EDIT: >_< you said per month..

Hour drive each way, I would commute, it's not that bad! Alternatively, you could do what I do, commute twice a week (100 miles each way) and stay over night occasionally. Edit, in fact.. I'd say commuting along a motorway is sort of nice. It's a rare 1.5 hours that I can spend without feeling like I need to be looking at my computer.

  9. Yeah, the feedback system really needs to be fixed soon, good for buyers to find out if they have a good reputation.

I've asked the current developer of the plugin for a free copy of the latest version.

I was the original author of the feedback system (I wrote it for TF) but handed it over to someone else when I didn't have time to maintain it. He has since handed it to someone else who has now made $5000 worth of sales of it. Bummer.

  10. Yep they have been painted red. The FR comes with the same brakes as the Cupra, it's only the Cupra R's that have red Brembo's as standard.

The FR's have Cupra R bumpers, silver mirrors, that love or hate black/grey interior and 17" versions of the Cupra R wheels. Most of the FR's you will see are diesel although I recently learnt that it was also available with a 1.8t petrol engine.

Also note - The front splitter has been ripped off and it appear that part of it still on the passenger side :P

I think my old FR had black/grey seats and that didn't have the cupra body kit on it... can't fully remember though.

Good spot about the front splitter thing! I think I might give it a miss: more miles than mine, broken splitter thing, it has a dent too thats not mentioned on the listing and painted calipers (the painted calipers are more of a warning sign to me... you could argue that its been looked after, but could also argue that a car 'enthusiast' has had it and ragged it about a bit - quite an assumption to make but I like things to be left as they're meant to be :P)

Just ordered a new bonnet catch for mine too which includes the all important micro switch, so hopefully that should fix my locking and wiper problem - that will make me moderately more happy with it.

  11. I wouldn't part-ex it mate, you never get a good deal unless you trade in a total shitter.

Looks like a nice car, I wanted an FR until I got an insurance quote :(

And yes, I believe the calipers are meant to be red - I'm sure all the FR's and LCR's I've seen have them, someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure.

A quick look on gocompare suggests my insurance should drop a bit, but I'd have to double check.

A few problems have surfaced with my vrs recently, all pretty minor but they seem to be stacking up: boot doesn't open unless you open a rear door first (actually it was like that when I got it), no warning sound when I leave the lights on, the bonnet switch is dodgy and thinks the bonnet is open so it won't let me put my intermittent wipers on (I can 'fix' this by disconnecting the sensor..), the coolant warning light comes on sometimes but fixes itself if you restart it (needs a new thermometer thingy it seems - quickish fix) and there is a 'squeak from the aux belt' which I don't know anything about really - so it sort of is a shitter. Although it does go pretty well.

Soooo, for the sake of not having to actually sell it (and feel guilty about the issues), and get it serviced and MOTd, and having to find £3500 up front, I'm tempted to trade it and be done with it - assuming he can give me a half decent part exchange deal. Webuyanycar says its worth £2500, so going on that price, trading in the car plus £1100 on top... seems tempting (actually less tempting now I've done some actual maths :D)

  12. Car lords: looking at this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-Seat-Leon-1-9-TDI-Cupra-FR-150BHP-/261173357347?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3ccf252b23 - any comments? Are those calipers meant to be red? or has someone messed with them? I'd prefer a car that hasn't been fiddled with.

My fabia is due for a service, mot and tax in 6 days time, as a cost of around £300 I guess - assuming the MOT doesn't bring anything up. Any idea's how much an 04 silver fabia vrs, 92,000 miles might get me part exchange? I'm tempted to make a rash decision and trade it in.

  13. I dunno if you're trolling or not? If you are, then fair play... if not then err, I don't know where to begin.

  14. If you can decypher:

hi ok the portable hard drive is this by any-chance the western digital my passport this version has a usb connector inside not a normal sata connector

the fault you have is more likely possible 1)spindle is locked down motor pushing down

    2) the bottom head is touching the platter which stops it from turning

if the actuator arm is not in its home position then the drive must had been on at the time it was dropped

normal for safety the heads should go back into its park positions

if the actuator arm is untouched and there no head-stack damaged

then there a possible good recovery chance

as the drive has been opened then recovery goes down to around a 45% to a full recovery
as some drives have alignments built into them

as for recovery price if you can find out what type of quotes they have had

we might be able to do it better

data recovery company will tell them as the drive is open it has to go into a clean room
which can cost just alone around £400 and they will charge a fee just for looking at the drive

they wont get this job done cheap and other companys will charge around £1,000 to £1500

turn around for this type of work is about two weeks or longer

  15. Just spotted your post - must have skipped that page. looks like a nasty crash!

The insurers came back with a decent price when I wrote off my leon (direct line), I tried to tell the man I wanted more, but he'd obviously heard it all before and assured me it was a decent price - which when I looked about a bit, I realised it was. Hopefully they'll be nice to you :)
