    When I was learning them I used to kick hard and stick my front foot in the way. This helps if you start doing them on the back or front wheel where you may find it hard to spot the cranks coming around.

    Do as mark said with the old chain the the vice and use some form of bar to get loads of leverage on the crank arm while its in the vice.

    Keep your legs straight and lean forward. This will help scoop the back end higher than you think is safe, but it should help you keep the roll back.
