  1. You shouldn't shop in any supermarkets. They're all full of over-priced, under-nutritious food that's got to the shelves through the pain of the producers. That aside, I like the fact that everyone is getting all worked up about this chemical that was perfectly legal until 2002. *shrug* personally I try and avoid as much non-organic produce as possible. When I leave London in a few months I intend to increase the percentage of organic food in my diet even more.
  2. Can I ask why you're not sure about Coral Cache? From my perspective on this it seems an almost perfect solution, and requiring as little effort as changing one line of PHP (depending on how monkey works). I imagined Monkey automatically Coralizing the URL that the "download this video" button points to, then everything on the front end is still TS but the videos are passed through the CC network. Essentially nothing would change except your bandwidth usage would drop dramatically. In regards the bittorrent option, you probably won't find anything badged as a "server side torrent creator", but then you have no need for one. I'm guessing TS is likely running on Linux (or possibly BSD), in which case there are plenty of console bittorrent tools around. Infact the standard bittorrent client comes with a tool for just this. A very simple way of making this work would be to write a shell script that you set to run every minute or so in cron that checks for new files, runs "btmakemetafile.py" on them, then publishs the .torrent file and runs "btdownloadheadless.py". Obviously there are a few more design implications you'd need to work out to make it robust, but it's certainly very possible. The main issue I can see is in administrating the torrents after the downloads had started, this would either need people to admin it from the console or you would need to allow PHP access to system commands. Neither or which is ideal. Anyway, I'm going on too much. I don't mean to tell you how to run TS, I'm just finding the problems in designing a system such as this quite interesting :)
  3. I was assuming that TS would always be the master seed, so unpopular or old files would still always be available, but when the whole of TF swarm for a new file (e.g. tm1 madness) the shack wouldn't take such a massive hit in it's bandwidth. This would probably need some form of tool on TS to automatically create torrents of and seed files when they're uploaded, but I can see several relatively simple solutions to that (even if it involves a cron job and shell script). Ideally the end effect on the usage of TS would be as minimal as possible, so people should still be able to just use it to upload and download files without having to worry about creating a torrent, looking for seeds or any of the associated nonsense that can come with bt. With intelligent upload scripts and a few simple guidlines on getting a bt client set up locally it *should* be fairly straightforward to get such a system running (famous last words there). Mind you, setting up the shack to simply Coralize all it's download links would almost certainly be a million times easier and much less likely to cause luser headaches.
  4. Aha, got it. Have a look at Coral Cache. Looks like it could be a really good system. With the added advantage that it requires absolutely no effort to implement. Just make sure you add .nyud.net:8090 to all posted TS links :) Although at the moment Coral only supports files <50meg, but that should cover the large quantity of files posted to TS. edit damn bbcode again.
  5. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before (perhaps even by me), but have you thought about making a move to using bittorrent on Trials Shack? With TS seeding all the files instead of directly hosting them it would mean everything could still be available, but large rushes for popular files wouldn't as negatively affect the bandwidth. There is also a caching system of some sort that is always being discussed on slashdot for use in just these situations, I forget what it's called right now but I'll look it up and let you know. If you need any help with anything technical (or otherwise) on TS please let me know, I'd be more than happy to do whatever I can to keep this running.
  6. Don't buy f**king underwear. Buying a girl lingerie is really not a present for her now is it. Even if she does honestly appreciate it (and isn't just, as is far more likely, being nice about it) it's such a f**king horrible cliche it should be avoided like the plague. I'm also failing to see why her jewellery being "pure gold" means it's not "pikie [sic] bling bling" - I always thought "pikie [sic] bling bling" was by definiton gold (sure, most of it's probably 9ct, which is far from 'pure', but I doubt by 'pure' you meant purely 24ct ), but I guess that's just my perception on things. Really, you should know what your partner wants for a present. No-one on here is ever going to be able to suggest anything worthwhile, because they don't know your girlfriend (and if they do you should be asking them in person, not on an open forum). Strange as it may seem to some people the female of the species aren't all the same, they all have individual tastes, just as us (for the majority on here) males do. The best way to buy a present for someone is to pay attention to them, listen to the things they like, learn their style, passions and hobbies. Then the perfect gift should be obvious. I always think it's a good idea to put something of yourself into a present as well, make it something you appreciate. That way you're more likely to get something especially nice, and not just a run of the mill thing they sort of appreciate. You probably shouldn't listen to me though, not only am I embittered, drunk and prematurely age'd, but I agonise far too much over every present I have to buy for someone I care about.
  7. Posted from NMC for aj_trials: "hello, i know that alot of you are not on half term as you are older and some peoples half term doesnt end on the sunday comming but i thought it was a good name for the ride and was wondering how many people wanted to ride london on sunday. meet at shell for 11 like usuall. would be cool if we can get quite a few of us down there" Link to original topic: http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/forum/index....4&st=0&p=568781
  8. Orac was a super computer from Blake's 7 that could predict the future. Blake's 7 is still a f**king brilliant show even though it's nearly 30 years old now, well worth getting hold of it if you come across a boxset/download anywhere.
  9. Ok, lets see. I'm 5'10" and I can hop about 6". So that's 6/70 * 100 = 8.5% Yes! WINNAH! :)

    Xbox

I was going to order one the other day, but Microsoft place the sticker with the serial number directly over the top of the screws, so mine got defaced when I opened the box :o/
  11. Echo and Onza are entirely different companies - different companies often have different policies on such things.
  12. I don't use BT, or for that matter any ISP that caps my bandwidth usage.
  13. They may be doubling (or quadrupling) your speed, but they're halving your monthly bandwidth caps. What exactly is the point of having a 2meg line if you have a download cap of 15gig? I regularly do twice that on a 512k line. Don't even get me started on the 1gig cap for basic users. I used to use more bandwidth than that on dial-up!
  14. For anyone who can't get to it, here's a direct link to the video: http://media.santoalt.com/101/100704/speed_tank.wmv I had to use windows and IE to get to that :o/
  15. From the sound of it you may have a problem similar to that described here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~bsamwel/dwl-510-on-linux-2.6.html I guess you've already got the latest rtl8180l drivers from Realtek? If not get them here. If so, try checking the real PCI id of your card against the one stipulated in the NET8180.INF file as described in the top link above - this would explain why the card is showing as present but ndiswrapper can't discover it. If their all present and correct then evidently the problem's elsewhere...
  16. Heh, the line between doing something as an example, or to prove a point, and actually attempting some form of malicious hack can be quite blurred at times :) A good case in point (and a great advert for the information that can be gleaned from log files) is a project one of my co-workers, Alex, has been playing with for the last few months. It's essentially a tool to harvest usage data from LiveJournal - it's starting collecting so much data that we've been having to come up with all sorts of interesting ways of interpreting it. It's actually kind of hard to describe what the project does without writing quite an extended essay. But basically it amounts to collecting massive amounts of usage data from Livejournal simply by hosting several small images elsewhere and intepreting the logs. Thanks to the London goth scenes massive integration with LJ you can actually tell a scary amount about the scene's social interactions from this data. Even to the point that we've been able to fairly accurately guess that couples have got together quite a long time before they've announced it to anyone.
  17. Heh, I guess you already noticed how it can be done then :) As for mapping it to people, that's a bit trickier. It can't be done accurately, but you can make reasonable guesses from the times and the referrers. I did think I could make more accurate guesses as to the IP's of people who reply by looking for "act=POST" in the referrer, but it doesn't seem to show up at all, not sure exactly why that is. I guess if you were after a specific person it wouldn't be too hard to work out which IP is their's with a little detective work. I should point out that I'm not actually going to do anything with these logs. I've never attempted to do any cracking in my life and don't intend to start now - just done as an example really.
  18. It could be, pcmcia can be a bit of a pig at times (at least it was a year or so ago when I was last playing with it). Is your wired LAN a pcmcia card or built in? If you're still trying to use ndiswrapper though I suspect the problem is that your card isn't supported, unless I've missed some information somewhere that says otherwise? What's the card model number/chip type? I'll have a poke around and see if I can find anything about making it work properly.
  19. Looks fun, I think I might head along :) It'll only be a few miles from me by then as well.
  20. Hmm, ndiswrapper seems to be only for cards that don't have 'proper' linux support - according to the list here your card isn't supported by ndiswrapper. Although frankly I'd not reccomend using ndiswrapper if you can help it anyway. I've not got personal experience with it, but you're always better using native Linux software for your cards rather than trying to load windows drivers into a wrapper. You want to find which native module supports your cards chipset, try googling for the cards model number and 'linux' and you should turn some stuff up.
  21. They may not be encrypted, but you still need to root the server to get them. Of course, you could easily harvest IPs from any forum. Just like I'm doing with this topic :) That wouldn't be hacking though. Hacking is pretty much what I do for a living (i.e. coding), breaking into computer systems is correctly called cracking.
  22. My pedal choice is definitely down to the shoes I wear. When I used to ride only in skate shoes I swore by platforms and found my VP's absolutely useless, especially in the wet when I couldn't trust them at all. However, since getting my trials shoes I've completely changed my opinion - the soles on my Ribos stick to cages like glue (they also stick to V8s pretty well, just a little better on cages). Of course, there's still the problem of durability with cages - mine are currently completely smashed and bent out of shape. But considering the cost of replacement it's not too big a problem really.
  23. delusional

    Names?

"dan" wasn't available and I don't like using my full name all over the place. "delusional" is the name of my domain, and as such a large part of my email address that I use for my identification everywhere. It's nice to keep similar (if not the same) usernames as far ranging as possible.
  24. Griffin, who I mentioned above, run their service on a month by month basis. So no 12 month contracts, you can leave at any time. And they have no bandwidth limitations - 3 gig is really pissy, you may as well just get dial-up with a download cap like that.
  25. Well yes, but they only supply the network infrastructure, they have no control over port blocking, bandwidth limitations/caps and the like. The only time BT supplying the infrastructure becomes a problem is when something breaks in their network.
