Recommended Posts

Hey im 17 in a few weeks, and want a car before, so i can go out everyday with my parents and practise

Now my parents are being really good to me, and giving me 1500 towards a car....

i didnt ask for this and have saves 1000 so no sly comments

the garage we use son is selling his polo, its e reg thats 87, its had the head gasket or woteva that is, replaced, and has been looked after, and we could get a free mot with it. they want 500 quid, the insurance is 800, its a 1.3

should i get this then have 1000 towards my next car from my parents.

i would proberly keep it for a year, then get somethign much more beasty? surgestions?

or should i get a 1.2 punto etc. and keep it for a lil bit longer, thing is i get bored of things quite quick so this may not be a good idea?

Thanks for any help offered

Dave

My advice is:

For your first car, get something crap. Something cheap and crap, that you wouldnt really mind denting or scratching.

That way, until youve learnt through sheer experience, you can't do any expensive damage to your car.

Then, when you come to your next car, you can get something new, and then really appreciate how well it drives, with all that experience in a crap car behind you. It will make you more aprreciative, and an altogether better driver.

You wouldnt start trials on a £2000 bike, so dont start driving in an expensive car.

The Polo sounds ideal

go cheap just to learn in, keep it for a year and save another £1000+ then when you pass, flog the cheapy polo and buy something really nice.

you don't really need a nice car just to learn and if you spend more now you will wish you had held back in a years time so you could have a nicer motor.

I bought an R-Reg Vauxhall Corsa, 1.0 with 72k on the clock (and CD player thrown in) for £1650. I'm expecting the insurance to be around £850 quid, which was the cheapest quote we got from Norwich Union, after taking Pass Plus (costing around £150) your insurance drops dramatically, as you get a 9 month insurance plan, but are given 1 years no claims. After that 9 months is up you'll get another 12 months with another year no claims, bringing the total to 2 years no claims.

My advice would be to get something relatively young (less than 15 years) with a small engine, something around 1.1-1.4. Don't be picky! It's your first car so it's going to get dented and damaged sometimes.

his was my first car,

gallery_472_185_7349.jpg

H reg VW polo, 1.1

And I tell you now, i had less problems with that than I have had with my N reg escort.....

They are really good cars and will probably last forever! lol

However nice joe's car is, Id do as everyone else has said. Get a banger of a first car. I destroyed the passenger door on that polo and wasnt THAT bothered. But If id of done it on my escort id be horrified. Also you will actually appreciate power steering and all those comforts after having a older car. As my dad says, if you can drive a crap car, you can drive any car

yeah, i went to see the polo coupe s 1.3 today, (wel they came to me at work) its a ctualy not that bad, its OK :D it looks much better in black (than in the link i put up) and they also look "nicer" in real life, for 500 quid i really cant go wrong (Y) and being a mechanics car, im sure its been looked after better than if it was some gimps. gettin a few electrical problems sorted out, and a free mot with it.

He took me for a drive in it too, its a actualy quite nippy, being the "sports" version :D

thanks for the usefull comments :) will post a pic when i get it :D

That's the car I'm currently driving, a H reg Polo GT Coupe, and it just so happened to be my first car as well. It's got 110,000 on the clock, and I've not really had any major problems with it. Certainly nothing has been replaced that you wouldn't have had to change on any car of the same age.

The only issue I have had is that it occasionally stalls when coming to a stop in very cold, damp weather when the engine hasn't warmed up, even with the clutch in. I'm pretty sure it's a faulty sensor somewhere, but they're quite expensive to replace so I just kind of live with it :turned:

Performance wise it's pretty decent for a first car, and the GT version puts out around 50% more power than the standard coupe, although they're a bit harder to find. The one thing you might want to consider is the insurance. It's only a group 8, but for a first time driver you might be looking at some fairly steep quotes for the first year or two.

I really like that!!!

As everyone knows, VW's have amazing engines. They just seem to go on and on. My head gasket eventually went on mine though, which is probably the most common engine fault of any older VW. Mine used to randomly stall when cold aswell. But mine used to do it when you were just sitting there, with the engine not warmed up yet it would just rattle and then stall. And that problem of stalling when putting the clutch in is due to the carb being blocked due to people using the lower part of a tank of petrol all the time and the crap blocing it
