If I were you I'd get the single speed kit from Tartybikes, then just use your derailleur as a tensioniser, works fine for me. Plus it saves money then you could save up for new parts bike, whatever

Most of the time I'm doing trials I'm able to bail just before it would get really bad. The times I crash are when I'm not paying attention and go into a lamp post or something.

It's sort of like how you'd slow down, sort of. Like when you pull it it doesn't just lock the wheel completly just slows it down. If you get what I mean...
