  1. Last month my friend and I organized a rather informal roadtrip around the country. We visited 6 cities. Since my wrist isn't working I didn't take the bike with me. Having nothing else to do, a lot of footage resulted. My camera skills are shit or I need a wider lense but other than that I'm pretty pleased with the result. Many thanks to Mark Westlake who provided a few invaluable tips just before we set off. It's pretty much 5 videos in one with a large variety of riding spots and top local riders so despite the length shouldn't be boring. Hope you enjoy. Oh and sorry Germans, apparently unavailable in your country.
  2. Now that's an interesting idea! I'll look into it. He'll never submit anything himself so I'll email them asking if they could get in touch with him.
  3. Lovely brake. It looks cheap but the feel, modulation and power are uncanny. Kinda weird for the rear wheel though. Bought my dad a nice little voice recorder for his birthday and he seems to have understood why. Everyone around him keeps saying he should write a book but dad thinks he's too boring. This is caused by him being best friends with people like Henry Marsh or Kate Fox. He's had some media coverage lately which could be an interesting read (FT article). By the way, I love how they've photoshopped that briefcase in there. My dad packs into plastic carrier bags because he can squeeze them into all the nooks and crannies in the boot which is full of spare wheel. So yeah, hoping that with this voice recorder he'll document his life which is so rich and interesting I can't remember a tenth of it. He was among others a rally driver (held an international license), made films for the Polish underground movement during the communist period and when he was young he designed from scratch and built model planes including a succesful flying wing. He also has great stories from Kodak where he worked as a technical writer for a few years. Still an epic petrolhead although what he seeks in cars is perfect communication through a mechanical experience rather than performance. That's why he's had the same MG for like 50 years.
  4. Loo + shower + sink. The scale-crap-hair laminate inside was one of the reasons for failure. Other being that the pressure switch couldn't breathe properly. The macerator is a Sanipro XR and it's got a fantastic design to be honest. So easy to dismantle and work on.
  5. Fixed a macerator today which was stuck in the on position for the last two years (installed a manual switch to override the problem, flooded my room a few times). It was the shittiest job I've ever done but I'm f**king proud of myself. Yesterday I fixed a vacuum cleaner. Tomorrow I shall fix something else. Getting rid of worms has really changed me.
  6. Mildly car related. Want to paint a pair of speakers in piano black. Has anyone worked on such a finish? Speakers are finished with veneer so presumably I need to use putty to even out all the irregularities in the surface. Then black base. What about clear? I read somewhere that using upwards of 8 coats in 3 painting sessions is advised?
  7. Is it true that one should de-dust base between coats? Could you point to a picture showing what you mean?
  8. Tom Booth and a few others might enjoy this: http://www.mckennasgarage.com/xke/jag_26.htm He gets properly anal later on and the results are jaw dropping.
  9. Stylus for my tablet has been working intermittently for a year now, I contacted Microsoft about it and a few minutes later I got an email saying that they're sending me a replacement. Got to love their customer support.
  10. Privacy not allowing me to post a video anyway
  11. Can't understand a word but this is sooo funny.
  12. Can't thank you enough for that advice. I read it before leaving for a roadtrip but didn't have time to reply. Holding the camera with one hand and a correctly angled tripod with the other made all the difference. However, only after a few days did I notice that the Warp Stabilizer crops images (duh). So part of the footage is too unstable raw or cropped too much to be used, much like this: Another thing I noticed is how much the footage from a Hero 4 Black is sharper than that of the 7D. Need to blur it despite using 1080p25. edit: wow this actually embeds posts now? Could be quite useful in boosting forum stats.
  13. Says HD103UJ on the drive. Indeed, it's quite odd that both failed. I haven't been using them for some years. Bought a WD Green 3TB 7200. Don't want RAID or anything like that anymore, 2x more hard drives = 2x higher failure risk. Time to move 2TB of data onto it... Somehow, apart from their SSD drive, every single Samsung device I've used is either crap or has broken down. -- edit: can someone advise on LTE antennas and modems? Talking about the stuff that will boost a signal which is hardly available. I'm fed up with my broadband, it's weird how the speeds I'm getting are even legal. Also a dumb question about routers. Can I forward the internet connection from the LTE router to another router?
  14. Good call. HD Tune detected a few serious errors, an hour later one of the drives disappeared from Windows and then from BIOS. They used to be in hardware RAID. It's funny how both drives are the same and both have experienced the same major issues. WD Caviar Green or Enterprise...
  15. Either 34UC97 or 34UC95, probably the former.
  16. I've connected two redundant drives that started to pack up many years ago. They appear in good health according to some software I downloaded but they did report errors in the past and Windows is doing it now. Should I just ignore the Windows message?
  17. It's a GTX 660. Going to have to upgrade anyway, need more cuda performance. Accoding to google, optimal viewing distance for a 1440p 34" is around 3ft. I've been experimenting all evening with viewing distances and trying to simulate the 34" LG experience. It seems to be bang on. Perfect height and width. And it needs to be curved. Will wait a week or two before making the purchase. Perhaps there's something else out there I haven't discovered yet.
  18. Yep, that's the brilliant thing about dual monitors. Multitasking is as easy as grabbing a window and dragging it onto the other monitor. I can only imagine that moving around windows on a single monitor would be extremely fiddly. Although LG seems to have an app which resolves that issue. Somehow I doubt it'll work like having two separate workspaces but perhaps they've nailed it. 16:9 is not a problem, I don't watch films on my PC anyway. What looks amazing is stuff like this: Going to give it a lot more thought. It's not that urgent and quite a difficult choice as it turns out. Thinking that two 27" monitors with a small bezel could be pretty neat too and would cost roughly the same. The only nuisance iis that with such a setup, the bezel is right in the middle. Would need an odd number of monitors to counter that.
  19. Cheers guys. My card appears to be 4K capable but my mind is almost set on the 34" LG monitor. However, since I'm not going to be able to get my hands on one before buying, I'm worried that it won't be big enough. The setup I've been using for years is a 1200p 24" and a 1050p 22". If my calculations are correct, the screen size of the LG is around 31.3" x 13.4". This would result in 420 square inches, whereas the current setup is almost 480. That's a 12.5% decrease. Can a dual monitor setup even be compared to this 21:9? I've never worked on anything larger than the 24" I'm using. Could always use the LG and the 24" but that could be unergonomic. Finally, is the curved screen worth the extra money?
  20. Haz, does that parameter define sharpness?
  21. I was set on a LG 34" ultrawide but a few days ago I visited a friend who uses a HDTV as a monitor and I was impressed. It was a very relaxing thing to use as I could lean back and rather than have to lean in to see the details on the display. With 4K resolution I can imagine it would be pretty epic. My budget is around 700 pounds and 40" seems like plenty especially as I'd be sitting 3ft from it. Intended use is mostly office work, photo and video editing plus a tiny bit of gaming. Photo and video work is not professional so I'm not sure if 10bit colour is important at this stage. Having spent a few hours in stores I'm now completely lost. Firstly, why do these massive 4K TV's cost a lot less than the equivalent 4K monitor? Secondly, what's the difference between a 4K TV and a 4K monitor? Does anyone use a 4K TV as a monitor and could recommend something? So far I've only managed to establish that I need an IPS screen and that 50" is way too much
  22. Cheers for the ideas. My chief concern is that the camera setup we'll be using has no image stabilization and so far any attempts at handheld shots have been a failure. Is it possible to achieve good results with just a bodged glidecam type of setup?
  23. Results inconclusive Doctor wants to carry out loads of tests, parasites is one of them so that's cool. As strange as it may sound, I really hope it's a tapeworm. Kill it, shit it out, problem solved. Going on a trials roadtrip tomorrow, ordered a gimbal last week to take some good shots and they haven't even assembled it yet. f**kers. So all I can do now is build myself a glidecam using some painting equipment, weights and wood.
  24. This could be the answer: http://europe.newsweek.com/germany-regulator-forces-facebook-allow-fake-names-331002 Only thing is, how does facebook establish whether your account is German or not. Opening a new one and using a proxy is probably the answer?
  25. Anyone had a tapeworm? Don't want to start such a gross topic so lets keep it in here I suspect I might have one, will get myself checked asap. Just wondering what the specific symptoms were if any of you guys got a parasite in the past. Scanning through a list of possible but contradicting symptoms doesn't give one an idea of what the specific symptoms of an individual could be.
