Road Bike For Sub 250 Squids

I'm not much of a roadie, but I'm getting fat and I think buying a road bike will solve all my problems :ermm:

Anyway, I purely can't be bothered to spend more than 250 quid as I "might" not use it as much as I'd like to and whats the point really of spending any more.

So, I've been pondering over this;

Doesn't look too bad. CB used to have a good name back in the day, don't know about now though.

I think it's the best I'll get for the price to be honest but what do you think?

Go to Decathlon, they do a £170 road bike that is a TOTAL bargain. I've got a Carrera I've had for a few years, cost me £320 in the sales. The Decathlon one is almost the same spec (Sora with flight deck shifters) for half the price. I don't know how they do it*, but it's a total bargain, there's no point even considering anything else for that sort of money IMO.

Hold on, I'll try and find it online. Decathlon's website is a bit rubbish though.

*Actually, I do know how they do it. Loss leaders. They sell certain bikes at a loss to entice people into the shop.

Now,

As you said "back in the day", they did have a good rep. But also remember, they were Bianchi expensive then. So for £250 you can hardly expect a top spec road bike. If you just want one to have a bit of fun on, go fun it, BUT, expect things not to be up to the kind of standard you'd want them to be.

All I will say is, look on ebay. Do some research, you'll get a better quality bike for the same price.

:)

*edit. Good point Tomm. Try that before mine :P

EDIT: It's not on the website, I told you it was rubbish. Is there a Decathlon near you?

Surly you can ring them? Or is it an "only in store price" ?.

Edit : I've got a Roadie Touring Bike - Bob Jackson - Bright Yellow.

Dad gave it to me, anyone know anything about them ? It's about 40 years old...

The only thing is, because it's a loss leader, they might have sacked it off and put the price up for the new season.

I can't really see the point in spending lots on a road bike unless you're going to race it. Mine has done 3000 miles on the original drivetrain, in fact I haven't replaced anything except for 5 spokes in the rear wheel (repeat 100 times "this is a road bike not a BMX"). I've got a mate who has a much nicer road bike, it was about £600. Carbon forks + stupidly light 16 spoke wheels, all round better. It goes 1-2 mph faster but that's it.

Specialized make the nicest road bikes :)

The S Works Roubaix is the nicest bike i've ever owned. The S-Works tarmac is the nicest road bike i've ever ridden. (See the trend :))

At the bottom of the range would be a langster, single or fixed speed fun :) Or, save a bit and buy a budget Allez. There great bikes, with a light frame and nice spec.

Buy the best you can afford. If you intend to ride it you'll get murdered on a cheap bike.

Anyway, this is bike porn -
