One For All You Electrician / Computer Lot..

It can be done, but how it's done will depend on what sort it is. If it's an active sub with a built in amp, then you'll need a 12v DC power supply sufficient to run it. If it's purely a cone, then I don't see why it can't be wired strait to an amp of your choice.

Then you'll need a power supply. House electric runs on AC current and the sub runs on DC current so you need an in-between.

A lot of people use a pc power supply as they're cheap and readily available. What you need to do is bridge two connectors on the power supply to trick it into thinking the motherboard it's supposedly attached to is giving it the "power on" command. You'll also need to get a power supply of a decent wattage and with a high amount of amps on the 12v rail. 28-30amps should be enough.

EDIT: Even this little'un managed it.

On the power supply, the 20/24 pin motherboardconnector, its the 13th cable ( green) thats the sensory wire. you connect that to any of the earth cables, and the power supply will switch on without the need for a motherboard (Y)

Most car subs and amps are actually 2ohm or 4.

Anyway, that doesn't matter! He's powering an amp off the pc supply, not the sub directly. It's only the amp and subwoofers impedance that need to match. And again, being in only either 2 or 4, they'll still work fine, just maybe notice a slight power drop!

Edit: I got round this the easier, and cheaper way! Get yourself a cheap car battery, and a cheap battery charger that will do a fast charge! Wire the amp off the battery, and have the battery charging constantly. Should work fine! That way, even if you have a power cut, you still have music! ;)

Nice thanks for that!
