A Long Shot But.....

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone here own or have parents / mates who own a 911 - pref a few years old 996 Carrera 2? I am seriously thinking about buying one, but would like to know what to look out for. Also, I would be interested in knowing service costs, tyres prices, brake parts costs etc.

Many thanks.

Its not great advice, but your best bet I would say is to watch top gear, my dads mate owns and owned some excellent cars, amongs them was Pug 205 cosworth engine bay wide kit etc, Westfield 7 race tuned Yamaha R1 engine, Mk3 Escort 400bhp+ Cosworth engine bay, etce. But I just cant quite think if hes had a porche, I will try think for you mate

Or another good thing to do is go look at one who is selling one.

Make sure you buy from a porsche approved dealer, warrenty is a must have when spending that much on a car. Check out here.

It seems that you can pick up a 50,000 mile 996 from 98 for just over 30k.

Servicing will be expensive, as with all sports cars, particularly tyres. Be prepared to be spending close to £200 per tyre.

As I say, getting an approved car may cost a bit more, but the warrenty it will come with plus pre sale checks are worth it, you dont want to end up with a very large, expensive paperweight.

Have you considered the Boxter S? Still good performance, but will be a lot easier on your wallet!

Deffo want a 911 - I have wanted on since I was like 5. Boxster isn't an option.

I've had a bit of a look on the net and I'm stunned. I've always have top end Vauxhalls and I actually saved up to buy the new Astra VXR which is £22,000 with the options I want (I currently have the old top end Astra Coupe Turbo). This car has 19" wheels - so the tyres will be no more expensive on a Porsche (which has 18"s) than on the Astra. Also, it seems you can buy brake discs and pads at the same price as the Astra's!!! Servicing is only a bit more than Vauxhall prices too!

I could likely get a 996 for about £28,000 upwards. Insurance should be OK (no points and 11 years no claims discount). My current car is insurance group 18, so I'll only be going up 2 groups to 20.

The only thing that worries me is a major mechanical failure sure as the engine blowing - but I guess this can happen with any car.

General opinion seems to be that porsche engines are just as good as any other german motor, damn near bombproof, remember that 9FF use a standard block and crank in their 750 BHP specials, so its going to be fairly reliable in the standard trim. If you havent looked already, try and find the evo magazine road tests, i've found they seem to speak the truth

I know you said that you think it's a long shot, but you're asking a bunch of kids over the internet advice over buying a Porsche.

I have allways been confused by people who want to show off to complete strangers.

Dan

I don't think he's showing off some how.

Eh? I was more thinking that parents would have one to be honest - and to tell the truth, I have no idea what the average age of people using this site is. If I wanted to show off, I'd post about my current car which I'm sure many people here would be more interested in than a Porsche.

Topgear site was a good source of info - cheers for that.

I can't find any active Porsche forums though.

Quote from jeremy clarkson, "the only reason you see someone in a boxter, is because they cant afford the 911"   (Y)

I think that too - although the Boxter S is pretty fast. The new cayman is pretty nice too - out in Noveber I think. 911 all the way for me though.

Oh - just got a first insurance quote as a guide - £1340. No bad, should be able to get it cheaper if I shop arround.

Are you married, or with a living with your girlfriend? if she has a clean record, put her on as the main person and be added onto her insurance, it will be a lot cheaper that way! give it a try. nationwide are very good with cheap insurance and will give you an online quote on www.nationwide.co.uk

And obviously you get a boxter if you cant afford a 911... thats just obvious. top gera reckons the boxter s is 3/4 of a 911 for half the price... and the caymen looks pretty nifty too, although second hand will obviously be out of the question...

But seriously... will you ever need the extra firepower of the 911? would you really be driving it to its potential? would you drive a boxter to its potential? for the price of the 911, you could have (in a few years time when they get a bit older) the mercedes amg slk! which top gear prefers the the 911!

My current car is faster than a Boxster, and my previous car was even faster than my current one - so I'm no stranger to fast cars. I love the SL55 AMG, but they are notorious unreliable, more expensive than the Porsche, very expensive to service and oh, voted no1 car for gay men.

I'm married - but not for long, hense why I'm going to have some spare cash (selling the house) :-

Oh, sorry to hear that. :- I know I keep quoting Top Gear... but the SLK AMG thats just been released is nothing like the SL55, and the new SLK that the had for 12000 miles didnt have a singal thing go wrong with it.

As for the gay thing... well gays must be rich or something to all own SL55's :)

The SLK AMG is cheaper than a 911 at £50,000 new, check it out on the Top Gear site... its definately an option over a 911. I'm not trying to persuade you otherwise, the 911 is an amazing car, but if you are spending that much, you have got to try everything to avoid dissapointment at a later date

Everyone knows mercs are shit nowadays.

Yes, thankyou for your well backed up insight, again I'll say to you that i'd rather trust the opinion of Top Gear testers over you, who probably isn't old enough to drive a car.

Its funny how a "shit" car can have absolutely no faults at all over 12000 miles no isnt it???

Insightful interlude :) ... the SLR sure is a really shit car :-

Personally I prefer the 911 to the SL55, there are two people in the streets around me who drive those, and both of them are middle aged rich housewifes :-. So I have a slightly twisted view of it.

I lurve the 911 Turbo!

Random 10 minuite video of someone red lining, and maxing out a 911 Turbo all over the place running from the police and just genrally messing aroud in stockholm. http://www.streetracersonline.com/videos/d2.php The 911t sounds sweeeeet.
