A Long Shot But.....

SLKs are like Boxters though - you only buy on if you can't afford the SL.

to be honest, it is a Porsche or stick with what I've got. Owning a 911 has been my dream for vitually my whole life and it is time to realise this dream now that everything else in my life is crap.

Insightful interlude :- ... the SLR sure is a really shit car  :-

shame the SLR is a McLaren. :P

and i stick by my word, Mercs are shite cars, very very poor value for money.

Audi's are where it's at nowadays.

And as for porsches, GT2 or nothing. :)

Anyway, Cossie for the win every time, welcome to heaven ladies:

So true, I prefere the sierra though. (bin 187mph in 1 so can't be that bad)

Actually, i take that back. The nicest car on looks and noise has to be a twin turbo'd, 3ltr toyota supra. (watch the video called redline on that link above about the 911 in stockhome :- )

uhh, no, it's a mercedes.

It has McLaren tagged onto the end because they lifted several technologies straight from their F1 Partner McLaren (like the carbon fibre components and some areo-dynamics from the 2003 Formula 1 Silver Arrows). The engine and entire drive system was developed exclusively by Mercedes-AMG... Infact it was the first engine they ever designed + built from the floor up entirely on their own. The whole car was also built by Merc-AMG.

Escort Cosworth (later version) - half the money, twice the fun.

Nah mate.............

Sapphire cosworths are faster, nicer, but then thats my opinion.

You really are best of taking a test drive from a proche dealer mate :-

There are lots of nice cars, but the 911 is the one I want. I love the GT3, but parts for this are very expensive, plus, they cost around £55,000+. I would also love a 911 Turbo, but again, this is too pricey - maybe that will be my second Porsche.

Audi is just as expensive as Mercedes you tard, and Audis are overpriced VW's, they share the same componentry just have a flashier interior.

If a Porsche is what you want, get it, you can't go far wrong with Porsche. Only buy one if your entirely happy, if theres anything slightly wrong with it or something you don't like about a particular car you are looking at, don't buy it, get one that is perfect for you. It'll grate on you forver otherwise! Approved buying means gauranteed faultlessness plus warrenty, so make sure you buy approved!

Really do take a quick spin in the in the rival cars before buying, if anything to make you feel even more strongly that you are making the right decision.

As for the SLK AMG being a poor mans SL55, yeah, I guess so, but then the 911 is the poor mans 911 Turbo, which is the poor mans GT2, which is the poor mans GT3, which is the poor mans Carrera GT.

The SLK AMG is the equivilent of the 911, NOT the Boxster, and the SL55, is about £100k making it the equivilent of the GT3.

Just to finish off, I can't stress enough how much peace of mind you will get by buying an approved second hand car, so, please buy an approved car!

I had a look around one yesterday - I couldn't drive it as it was under offer. The rear seats are tiny. If I moved the front seats forward, it would give just about enough room for an average adult to site for short journeys, but I think long ones would be out of the question.

The cabin looks great and the seating position is really nice. I am going to go with one with Satnav as this give load of extra features and many seem to have it anyway. I read into Tiptronic gear shift and I'm going to stay away for that as the 0-60 is 6s instead of 5.2s that you get from the 6 speed manual.

Next I'll need to drive one, should be fun.

mike , would it not be possible to buy the 911 and get a turbo fitted?

No - it isn't that easy. The cars are very different. The turbo version costs £40,000 more than the regular ones for a reason. Plus, fiddling with something like a Porsche isn't something people do, it would also devalue it.

Good man, manual gearbox all the way! I walk past a Boxter every day, and I've never even noticed that it has rear seats!

Try and get one with a removeable hardtop rather than a soft top, if you are getting a convertable. I dont quite know how porsche do their convertables, but a hard top is always best!

I could never tweak with such an expensive car! everything is designed in it like it is for a reason- stay well away!

Did you go looking for Porsches in the approved porche dealears? If not why not!?

It's the 911 I'm after, not a boxster. The 911 is a 2+2 seater, basically 2 adults and 2 kids / midgets. The Boxster is a 2 seater.

I never knew that :( I thought they would be the same... seems pointless really!

So... are you getting an approved one? What was the one like that you checked out yesterday?

I'm at the very least going to get one from a dealer, but will try to get an approved one. Approved ones seem to be about £5000 more expensive though.

I only look at the one yesterday to check out a few things. It was silver, tiptronic and 4x4 - all of which I don't want. I'm after a darker colour (maybe grey metallic) but not black. I want satnav to and if possible 18" wheels as standard they has 17s but most people opted for the upgrade from factory.

Rear wheel drive powersliding been creeping into your mind, hmm? Have you checked the prices on tyres, because the rear ones are over twice the width of normal car tyres, which would make them rather expensive...

I agree-stoney grey looks rather nice. The £5k extra for the peace of mind knowing that Porsche have checked it out and it is deemed as good as new, plus the warrenty, is definately worth it!

What do you want satnav for!? Ruins the look of the dash. Use a map you lazy sod! :(

You should be right on the 18'2-i was looking at the bmw z4, and nearly all of the approved models had been upgraded to 18's too- i guess if your gonna spend that amount of money, you want it just how you like it. The 18's may give you a bumpier, harsher ride though.

£5000 is a lot. The warrenty would only be for one year, and to make it worth doing, £5000 stuff would need to go wrong in that year, which is unlikey. I would deffo get an RAC check on any non approved car that I consider.

I have factory satnav in my Astra Coupe Turbo and love it. The stereo, climate control, trip computer, nav and more is all shown on the screen which is great.

Tyres are not too bad, the front ones are no more expensive than what I have on my Astra, the rears are more, but I was previously considering a new Astra VXR with 19" wheels, so in comparison to that, they are no more expensive.

Obviously the car will cost more to own, but after 5 years it would have lost little off the value, whereas an Astra VXR will drop from £21,000 to about £7,000.

The tyres on the 911 will be much wider than those on the Astra VXR, expecially the rear ones seeing the as the Astra is front wheel drive.

Are you going to give any other cars a test drive, because i will be interested in your opinion on them as in about five years i will be skipping merrily down the silly car route too.

check this out

I want a 911, it's my dream.  I know running costs are going to be more and it is something I'm ready for (tyres, fuel, insurance, maintainence).  I'm hoping the lack of depreciation will outweigh these extra costs.

Link doesn't work. :(

Oh, It was just the stats on the VXR compared to the 911. You can search for the exact car you want, for all its stats, all the way down to the 1996 models, so its pretty good. When are you thinking of getting your dream car then? I want pics! :)
