Freewheel Removal

Recommended Posts

I took my bike to the local bike shop last week to get the old freewheel removed, but they said that they needed a certain tool to be able to remove it. I was thinking about getting this tool and doing it myself, does anyone know what tool I need? I have a ACS claws four pin freewheel on tensile crankarm.

i think you can buy them off of tarty but they are best to use on the try-all freewheel so there isn't really any point in getting one, all you need is a vice, hammer and a decent size chisel. just hit the pins on the side of the acs and put some kind of lubrication on it and it should come off with ease. hope i have helped.

cheers lou.

why didnt your local bike shop have a freewheel tool ??

I think it is because the bike shop only really deals with mountain bikes, so it does not have a freewheel tool for removing a BMX 4 pin type freewheel. I've seen a tool on CRC that might do the job.

I still can't get the damm freewheel off. Also, the new freewheel that I brought from Supercycles won't work on my bike anyway because it is for a left hand drivetrain, which is very odd.

You sure its for left hand drive and your not just screwing it the wrong way onto the cranks? Quite possible the lockring will be facing the pedal.

As for removing your old freewheel, take it apart on the crank so your left with just the center on the cranks, then get a angle grinder and grind two flat spots on either side of the center making them both flat, you can then sit that part into a vice and hammer the crank arm.

If I was to put the new freewheel on the correct way, the lockring and 4 notches would face the bottom bracket, but the ratchet mechicism would be reverse to normal.
