Doesn't really matter if people drop out, os long as the costs are covered I don't care Didn't take spares personally, you'll never be able to guess which part may break. If the worst happens, deal with it while your out there there's a scrap yard just half a mile from the campsite anyway!

I'd like to think so mate, plenty of people have done it, many in much lesser cars than mine, but for my first time out there in my 4th lap I was pretty happy with myself, and it felt incredible! You have to enter the number of people travelling when you book, but the price doesnt seem to change at all, so it's £60 per car matey Bring a paz along and that's only £30 each, so really very reasonable! Last year I took a rigid tow bar with me just incase, I'll bring it this time as well if you like Now, go find a passenger! I'm looking at booking this on my next payday which is feb 15th, so that gives us a few weeks to sort out final numbers and payments and stuff. If anyone else would prefer it was all paid for as a group booking then I'm happy to do that myself on payday as I'll be able to cover it all. I'm going to e-mail Camping AM Nurburg this weekend to ask if we could get a group booking/discount with them too

to be fair, the Mini is geared SO wrong for the ring it's unreal. it's horrically uncomfortable, uses shit loads of fuel, and tends to break down every few hundred miles..... Around the ring I was putting in awful lap times around 11 minutes or so in the Mini, and constantly struggling with it overheating after just a few KM on track, and the revs being generally above 5k in top gear the entire time, where to be honest, it doesn't pull all that well. The audi can blast there at 100mph in complete comfort returning over 30mpg, with a decent stereo and comfy seats, and easily put in sub 10 minute laps all day long. It's honestly by far the better car for the trip..... If the mini had 150bhp+ and a decent final drive, it'd be a potentially different story..... Liam: if you can cruise at 70-80 then you'll be fine mate, when I went in sept with a 3.44 FD we cruised at 4.5-5k rpm the entire way with no huge issues. returned around 200 miles to a tank as well. if you're up for it, definately come along, it's the experience of a lifetime!

how did you want to sort the booking out? Everyone agree a ferry and book it all themselves? or all send the money to one person and do a group booking? Either is cool with me
-
yea it's all on Spunky! The general idea was, if we get there early enough friday, which we will from the 8am ferry, it won't be a mega rush friday night, so could even go down and do one lap friday night for a laugh, then saturday do some watching from the various viewing points, look around adenau and all the ring related shops, go to the new Ring complex and check out the worlds fastest roller coaster, then do some laps saturday evening, before spending all day sunday at the track

Yea I can imagine, Over here taillers are limited to 60mph, but I've been up to 90+ with mine without any huge worry
-
Very interesting question Alex, I'm not sure you'd really want to take a trailler much over 160kph anyway would you?

100% happening George Been looking at Ferrys today. So far, the suggested plan is to get the 8am Ferry from Dover, arriving in france at 10am, which would get us to the ring around 3ish probably. that'd give us time to book into the camp site, pitch tents, then go get food and beer before it all gets dark. Last time we got lost and arrived at 8pm, and it was a nightmare setting up the tent in the dark and trying to find food and shit in a new place. Leaving earlier would ensure we could chill out and have alaugh friday night. On the way back, we're looking at the 2pm Ferry home, which we will EASILY make it we leave the campsite by 9am. that'll get us into the UK at 4pm, meaning peole can be home at a sensible hour. Based on those ferry times, the ferry cost is exactly £60 Driving distance from the ferry port to the ring is 275 miles, which should be easily doable on a tank for most people..... Once people have confirmed they're happy with dates/times, I'm going to book my place on the ferry

Personally, my dailly routine includes: TF, turbominis audisport theminiforum uk-mkivs and of course facebook and ebay!

Same! I've been a member for a year or more I think, but post fairly rarely due to not knowing a huge deal about it all. I've got a few mates who post on there pretty regularly though

It's still a race track alex, it's just like any other trackday in esence, you're paying to take your car on track, and much like a track day, it's up to you how fast you go. The only reason there's so much more hype about driving sensibly at the ring is because it simply is so dangerous. Most tracks in the UK have maybe 8-10 corners, whereas the ring has over 100. there's very little run off area, and the chances of you getting to know it in a hurry are Nil. that's what makes it so dangerous! Personally, I loaded the audi up to the roof with all manner of camping gear and spare parts for the Mini, then got my Dad and mowgli to follow us all the way to the ring. When we got there I ripped out all the rear seats and spare tyre and tools, donned my helmet, and went out on the track. It's up to you how you drive, when I took the Mini out I was incredibly careful, having mananged to bin it first time out, so put in some shockingly slow laps. When I took the audi out, I felt much more comfortable with the car and what it was doing, and pushed it right to the very limit the whole way round, we were overtaking M3's and all sorts. You can push to the very limit, so long as you're prepared to take the risk!

Injection because his carb'd 8v is a sack of shite Robin: the tupmans still have the KR Oli bought, would that be of interest to you at all?

On the trip reports section on Northloop Revell: The Stephan Bellof porsche that did the 6:11 in 1983 is in the new Ring museum, it's awesome!
-
Did you read Alclarks most recent Trip report Chris>? One of his mates made that same mistake (red PS13 towed by a defender) and ended up doing a 750 mile round trip from the ferry to Nuremburg THEN Nurburg! hahaha.

The reason we're looking at the easter weekend is to try and keep the costs as low as possible, bank holidays either side of the weekend mean people don't have to book any time off work at all, and t2 full days/3 full nights is more than enough to get your fix! I'd LOVE to go for the 24 hour, but when you're going Rich surely they TF sessions will only be on Monday night and Tuesday? plus the place will be full of wankers..... Robin: TB, Frenchy and I are all going back in late august/early september as well with TMF on the retro run, what about comming along to that? I think your car more than qualifies!
-
Right chaps, I'll keep this brief, as it's only an idea discussed by a few of us so far this evening. Since getting back from the Ring in september, I've wanted to go again as soon as possible. following Georges post this week, it would appear we're all liking the idea of a trip at Easter time. So, the potential plan: Leave england on good friday, heading for the ring. Staying at Camping AM Nurburg Spend all weekend at the ring Come home monday night. Ferrys should cost around £50 per car, and the trip can be done on £100-£150 fuel depending on how thirsty the car is.... Lap's cost 22E each, or an 8 lap ticket is 140E. I think 8 laps would be enough for most people in a weekend. So far, it's looking like it'l be Me, Frenchman, Custard (echodave) George (Spunky) SteveS and few other potentials..... What do you reckon chaps? I figured if we get something organised sooner rather than later it stands a better chance of success. Official opening hours for the tourist laps have not been published yet, but the guys on Northloop seem to think it'll be open all Easter weekend. Anyone else interested>?

That's nuts. there was a guy there with us doing 9:20's in a 1300 polo GT with an air filter and a few suspension mods, but he'd done 100+ laps. still crazy though. One thing that I think is important to be aware of, is the absolutely insane cambers and gradients on the ring. Things like forza 3 and other console games give a fairly accurate representation of the way the track goes in terms of direction, but nothing can ever prepare you for quite how steep certain sections of the track are, parts of the track are so steep you can hardly walk up them! I found my biggest problem was the crests, since taking the sump off the audi on one, I'm particularly cautious of crests, and simply cannot make myself go flat out over one. you end up loosing so much time by knocking off say 20mph for a crest, as you spend the next straight getting back up to the speed you should have been doing at the start! make sure you car is up to a solid 12 minutes of extreme use. Many many people suffer from brake fade by the time they're half way round, probably almost as many people will suffer from overheating towards the end of a hot lap, and something I hadn'y prepared for, was the tyres seeming to 'go off', my tyre pressures had risen by around 9psi all round! I adjusted them accordingly so as to stay in my chosen range whilst on track, but even with the pressures correct, in the later 3rd of the track I found my toyo T1R's noticeably started to loose grip, this was pretty obvious even to my passengers, as we came out of most bends in a kind of 4 wheel drift, and the car got a lot more twitchy under braking too. The final thing to consider, is what you do when you get off the track. if your brakes are RED hot, there will be masses of heat built up in the pads. if you park up, even leaving the car in gear, all that heat from the pads can be passed directly into one local spot on the disc, which can very easily warp the discs. if your engine is overheating, or just incredibly hot when you come off track, it's also better to allow water to keep circulating rather than switching it off and letting it just boil in the block. also if you have a turbo car, that'll need time to cool a tad before switching off. I've typed too much now, if you've read all the above, congratulations! you must be very bored.

Without question, the single best week of my entire life. I'd say there probably hasn't been a single hour go by since I got back that I havn't thought about it (says Prawn sat at his pc wearing his Nurburgring hoodie) There's just something in the atmosphere over there, everything about the place is a complete petrolheads dream. It's all pretty much been covered up there by others, but basicly, don't be stupid! Youtube Video -> ">" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350">

haha. I've got all the wobble to get shot of first could take a while! Mind you, that said, if you look at it from a long term point of view, just 1lb a week adds up to over 3 1/2 stone a year!
-
I think you've got a 1 1/2 stone headstart on me TB! But I'll try anyway
-
4lb after week 1 it's going to be a slow process!

No JT, of course she wouldn't.

39 miles each way for me, takes anything from 40 mins on a REALLY good day, to an average of about an hour most days each way, all motorway though pretty much. 400 miles a week costs a lot when you're car loves petrol more than a catholic priest loves young boys.
