Ooops, that was me, on mink's PC. Isn't a Sempron 2800+ more expensive than an AthlonXP 2400+ though? Although stocks of Athlons are running out now anyway. The Sempron 3100+ is based on A64 architecture. The 2800+ and 3000+ are just T'breds though.

Unlikely. I *think* 6 pin firewire has a power supply to the camera. But I don't think a video camera would use it. Either way, a 6pin/4pin lead should work fine, unless there's something wrong with the actual lead itself. It's either gonna be your firewire card, the cable, or the camera. Try a new cable first, if that doesn't work, try a new card or camera (Or other firewire device).

Has it got more than one port on it? Try all of em. What OS you running? WinXP pro? Check control panel > System > hardware > device manager. Is there anything in there that has an exclamation by it? Sounds like some dodgy drivers to me. Getting low on ideas now :(

Did you build your PC? And is it a PCI firewire card or one that you connect the mobo headers to the case?

Yeah, I think I was thinking of the Steam client with counterstrike cache (meaning that you only have to download one file, rather than 2 (Y) )

Wow, so if my whole bike was air, it would weigh around 3.5lbs. Unfortunately it's not, so I'd save about 2 g and have to pump up my tyres all the time...

Refresh rates are to do with your monitor. You weren't running at that refresh rate, whatever the settings said...
