Preload = Engage your hub and push your pedals hard against the brake so that when you release the brake, all your power is applied in one single motion rather than slower. Sometimes if your not preloading you will roll slightly and this may be the reason you are having trouble going off edges.

Oh and dont forget to preload your back brake. Very important.

Its ok buddy, doesnt have to be rails. Something narrow will do, like those little triangular wooden fences. Just find yourself something narrow and low down and get practising.

I was about to say, as bucky has. Just go out and do gaps on rails. Because when you gap off rails you have no choice but to go off the edge. You will soon learn to feel where your wheel is in regards to the edge.
