scotty007
Hi guys and any girls !!! Thinking of doing a new build for the summer but I don't like the look or feel of 26" rims anymore. So was thinking of trying 24" wheels on my frame. Its an old school Saracen mad frame with original forks. So before I do this and jump into the fire I would like to know if this possible to do for 1 ! and if so are there any issues I could come up against such as brake alignment ! or bottom bracket drop out etc Any input would be sound at this point and will help me make my mind up which way to go with this build........ 24" or 26" thanks guys
Brettoll
I've not tried it, but surely there's just a whole number of reasons that this is a bad idea. A few that spring to mind... Geometry - If you think about it, the frame is designed to have optimal wheel sizing and fork lengths etc.. by sticking smaller wheels on it, I can imagine that the geometry and feel of the bike are going to be skewed Brake mounting - Rim brakes are a no, they won't line up at all.. disc's you can get away with but that's only if your frame and hubs have the capabilities You are better off saving the pennies and getting yourself a zoot or some something that has been specifically designed to take 24" wheels perhaps? Ross McArthur
The Ashton E.T came about after Edd fitted 24" wheels to his Pashely and found it to be much more fun...
Paperclip
I put 24" wheels on my Marino 26" street frame and used disc it felt ace, I started on the same gear ratio but ended up moving down a sprocket size on the rear, having vertical dropout's might be a good thing for once It feels slightly long for a 24" with the longer chain stays but it's worth it, especially running disc. scotty007
the geo doesn't worrie to much to be honest as this bike will be used an everyday bike with an 8 speed set up on the rear and not as a pure out trials bike ! ( maybe a little ) I did realise that the rear rim brakes would be a huge fail so I am going to go for disk style brake set up front and rear. Looking for any issues that would make this impossible to do really as I haven't seen anything that says it cant be done but at the same time don't want the bike to look like a clown should be riding it .... Brettoll
It is absolutely doable, as Ross pointed out Edd Tongue did it on his Pashley.. though as an everyday rider you are going to be knackered on 24"
scotty007
Well if its doable im doing it ! I don't have far to go for work or for the local sights so getting a little tired I can deal with.. best get on the wanted side for some 24 " sss and a rear brake set up !!!!! Did you ever go back to 26 after.?
dngr2self
If you can run disks then it will work. Try it out and see what you think.
Paperclip
Did you ever go back to 26 after.? I never looked back to be honest I could never hop as high on 24" but disc brakes are too appealing. I sold the above frame kit and a rider has it built as a 26" now
