It's a myth, along with others like washing it too often causes baldness, as does blow drying it. While these might be bad for your hair in terms of making it dry, and prone to breakage, the hairs DO grow back. Whether you go bald or not is genetic. The guy who was bald by 22 would have gone bald whether or not he had long hair, short hair or used a tub full of gel on it every day. The fact is that you lose loads of hairs every single day, but they all grow back. It's natural for hair to fall out and be replaced. I know it may look like a lot in your hand, but when you consider there are more than 100,000 hairs on your head, it isn't really that much! If you don't think it's normal, check out a womans hair brush sometime, those things are absolutely caked in hairs that have come out! Was funny though, i was at my cousins party and he fell asleep so we put this stuff on his hair, it went ginga, then it fell out....
