stock trials the real sport Posted April 27, 2006 Report Share Posted April 27, 2006 the other day i managed to cross thread one of the holes in my 4 bolt mounts in my frame (saracen m.a.d) there is still some thread in there as i managed to put a bolt into it but i should think it will get worse over time when the thread eventually dies what do i do? I could tap a new thread myself but im not sure is there some kind of specialist way of doing it. The outside diameter of the existing M5 thread is 5mm, which is the tapping size (bare hole) for cutting an M6 thread.A helicoil is a coil-like steel insert that has a big thread on the outside and a smaller one on the inside. You'd tap out to M6, loctite the insert in, and still have an M5 on the inside. Plus it'd be stronger than the original thread. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

montyrider Posted April 27, 2006 Report Share Posted April 27, 2006 (edited) Hey , i threaded one of my four bolts on my monty, it's really easy to fix mate. just find yourself a tap and die set get a m6 cutter put some tapping oil/lube in first and take it easy when doing it to get a nice cut and turn it in gently too start the cut, each time do 2 full turns and then turn it the opposite way a half or a full turn to get all the old crap cut off thread out, repeat this process until your happy you have cut enough thread. if you want do as these guys reccomended find yourself some helicoil/replacement thread insert to put in their as they're steel and much stronger wahey i just noticed i've been validated Edited April 27, 2006 by montyrider Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I think ill jus tap it to m6 or i mite know a guy who could helicoil it for me for free. Im sure i could make a steel insert myself all you have to do is tap a thread on the outside m6 and m5 inside maybe ill try it on tuesday. Thats around 3 quids or you could get a DIY set with 10 helicoils in it plus the tools to do it - Cost SGD$50. 80 quids ? That's just insane.
