This looks awesome. I remember being very tempted by one of these frames back in the day - the silver looks a lot better than the blue / black they came in.

Thanks @Matt24. I always liked them, although I preferred the cleaner look of the original Ashton ET, which I also have :)

the paint job on the diamond back always put me off, and I often wondered how it would look in a simple colour way. Glad I finally got to do it and I agree it looks better than the original. I get so excited when going to pick up bike bits from the powder coaters haha

  2. I would imagine this bike compares quite  with my experience of cycle cross / gravel bikes. I got one a 6 years back thinking I love cross country riding and I enjoy road cycling - a do it all bike would be great and cycle cross must be the answer.

The harsh reality is that for me at least, I found it incredibly frustrating. It exaggerated the limitations of its ‘do it all’ nature - It was no where near as fast as my road bike on the road, and no where near as capable off road as my XC bike. I’d ended up with the worst attributes of both disciplines.

So I’m agreeing with what had already been said. The bike and the rider look uncomfortable throughout the video - particularly during ‘street/park’ moves.

Be careful in considering what it is that you want from the bike else you might end up with the combined negatives from both ends of the spectrum.

That is a beauty! Silver and black with red trim is hard to beat. The paint was worthwhile over leaving it raw aluminum. If only all spare parts builds turned out this well!

Thanks @Swoofty, I’m glad I ended up with paint now, it gives it a bit more of a premium look I think -  the stickers certainly help too.

A new spot on a monday!? Now thats a good monday! First time riding at Rainham Skate + Parkour park, along with Craig and Rich Johnson ( On his Enduro MTB On his 47th Birthday!) We managed to find so many lines in such a small area, including loads on the deadly slippery rails and metal copings. We even threw in some brakeless riding near the end ( yeah its hard!!) Great mix of riding from everyone on some super technical lines!

Nice spot to ride, looks like fun! A good idea to set yourselves some brakeless challenges - gives any obstacle a different dimension.

  5. Frame and forks are being collected tomorrow afternoon so thought I’d get most of the remaining parts out ready to fit:

Looking forward to this, especially thanks to these little beauts that are in the post:

thanks for hooking me up @Ross McArthur

in other news I’ve managed to bag some echo urban disc only forks from eBay. Get in!

they’ll either go on the Zebdi or this. I’ll see what mood I’m in when I begin the build. I’m steering towards having the Ashton forks on this now.

Nah, can't be a Marino, that photo is all wrong. It'd be more like this.

    I jest...

Just looks like another blatant direct copy of a certain premium brand, but with catalogue dropouts? I'm not sure the Marino ones are that neat.

Edit: Looks like Mark's right: "Handgeschweisst von Marino Bikes in Peru"

Brilliant photo shop skills haha. Literally laughed out loud at this.

definitely similar to my Marino, drop outs are identical with the built in bolts for chain tension adjustment.

  7. Dropped the frame off at the spray shop, unfortunately they don’t do sandblasting, only shot blasting which is much more aggressive, so I’ve decided to have the frame powder coated silver. The Ashton forks are being done too in gloss black along with a set of Fatty’s which will go on the giant.

at this stage the Ashton frame will have Onza zoot curved forks. They are already Matt black, albeit with a green Onza sticker down the side. I’m not intending keeping them on it for long (holding out for some straight blade forks). So I’m not powder coating the Onza forks.

it should be ready to collect next week sometime.

2nd black forks - the contrast will pay off (and it's not a mid-late 2000s all silver TGS machine)

    Good justification @Brettoll

it’s going to have tensile cranks with a black 18t bash ring, so should be accidentally quite well colour matched.

the headset and seat clamp I ordered are anodised red. Should look interesting

  9. Also managed to spend an hour on the Diamondback Ashton frame with an angle grinder. The disc mount strap had been cut by the previous owner to accommodate a calliper that didn’t fit. So I’ve smoothed that off...

the gear cable mounts have gone too.

the forks that came with the bike had the brake mounts hacked at with a hacksaw. Took the opportunity to smooth these down too, although they are for the Planet X Zebdi. This may have to have Onza zoot forks, unless something straight pops up cheap.

shame because these forks do look the shizz on the rolling chassis!

hoping I might be able to get the frame in to he shot blasted tomorrow

  10. Also, had to order some new bits, parts that are cheap enough to buy new. This includes

    - seat clamp

    -13t double wide sprocket

    - DMR single speed spacers

and some bars, nuke proof neutron v2 risers - these will go on my Giant TT which I’ll pinch some arcade risers from I think - coupled with a bbb stem at 100mm and 7 degree rise. If that’s to long I’ve got an 80x40 one kicking around but does conform to a street build... I’ll see how it rides

  11. Front rim has arrived

smothered it in paint stripper between work calls today

It’s coming along nicely so hoping that I’ll be able to get the XC hub built onto it later.

Also cleaned up the old spike nipples, paint stripper soak them shook them in a tub with some sand, finally left them to soak in oil, they’ve come up okay too

and finally an idea of what the frame will look like silver - Rowan John’s old bike (sorry about the poor image quality)

Build a bike round a spare hub you had. Literally any one spare part is the start of a new build haha. Been there. And probably going to go there again at some point.

Wheel looks great and I do love a 2.4 24” Moto. Go to tyre before the Contis.

@Ross McArthur Mate it’s out of hand! was thinking exactly the same thing the other day.. ‘Oh I’ve found a single HS33 pad, a bike must be built to use it’ haha.

To be fair this was the original foundation for a Frankenstein bike that turned into a showroom condition fourplay. But I’m setting rules for myself on this one...

    1. No parts purchased unless I can’t repair what I have or I don’t have a variant of it.

    2. Said parts required must be second hand

    3. Additional money may be spent on paint job, but to keep it really budget... and more in keeping with Rowans proto bike (a nod to the good old days), sandblasting the frame silver is most likely. (Thanks for the photo and the  inspiration on this one Ross).

    4. I may not talk about about fight club

I have already broken rule 2 as I didn’t fancy a second hand headset, so got a ODP one for less than a tenner.

Picked up an angle grinder disc tonight to finish off what I started a little while back on the frame... smoothing off those gear cable guides.

Once done I’ll get some pics up before dropping it off to be sandblasted - the paint stripper barely touches the paint on this bike, and even when it does finally come off, there is a white layer underneath that appears to be able to withstand all but a nuclear fallout.
