Ford Escort Handbrake Rubbing

trials rules

Recommended Posts

Aloha!

Yea i pulled up my handbrake on my 1995 ford escort last night too far, now when i release it i can still feel it rubbing slightly which results in when i drive, it'll be wearing it out and it stinks from the friction.

Does anybody know a quick way to sort this out as i need to drive about 40 miles today

Cheers!

Not trying to make fun of this whole thing, but 1995, if it's had that handbrake on for a while, chances are it'll need new brake shoes/pads.

Or maybe try the cable, as on a car my dad had once the handbrake came right the way to the top and didn't fully work, it was just that the cable was stretched.

Don't know if your vehicle has an adjustable cable, if so just tighten/slacken it?

But if it's a case of the brake rubbing, my guess would be that it would need new shoes/pads.

first simple plan of attack, pull it on and off a few times, then leave it off, while you get someone to push/carefully drive the car forward inch by inch, take a lump hammer to the backplate giving it a good thwack several times on the sticking side. will often just loosen it from the point its stuck on.

Cheers for replies, i phoned a mate of mine who's a bit of a mechanic and he said smack the drum with a rubber mallet as something might be sticking so i gave it a good twatting with a lump hammer and that sorted it.....until i put the handbrake on again when it restuck.

Im assuming a spring has gone or the cable is sticking inside somewhere?

Maybe, or perhaps the cable is sticking. Or the cable-splitting bracket on the underside of the chassis might be bent, assuming the Escort has one. Best thing to do is get it up on a ramp and look at it, if it's becoming a problem. The drum brakes on the back of my car stick now and then, but once I move off, they unstick and stay off so it isn't a problem.
