Pooter Speakers

Well, I'm fed up with the awful sound coming out of my computer. So I need some advice on pooter speakers.

I found the Logitech x-230, which are supposed to be good, but hollow in the middle range.

I also was recomended the creative Inspire 2500.

I want to listen to musi on them, this will include rock, metal and mozart so they need to be good. Any ideas TF?

JBL Creature II's. Small, attractive, easily set up where-ever you want with plenty of cablage, and incredible loud with excellent quality.

Only critisism is and songs with a lot of mids, they are slightly restrictive, but it can be easily sorted with your soundcard driver's EQ options.

They are a 2.1 system.

dont get pc specific ones, go for a dvd surround package and you'll get more for your money. you can get decent enough systems for £100+ but if it were me id try and go for something good. Bose have a resonable reputation and shouldnt cost too much, I also listened to a samsung system in new york which sounded great but I couldnt tell you the price.

Get an amp and a decent pair of proper speakers. Shouldn't cost you loads (look on ebay for cheap decent amps) and will sound 10X better than most computer speakers. I've got a Cambridge audio A1 amp and a pair of old school sony speakers hooked up to my media pc, sounds really good for music and films.

Now... i've got a guitar amp under my bed, about 12X12, can i wire this up to my pc? i just need the adapter thing because it's got the big style headphone plug thing...

You can, but it'll sound awful. Tried it with my bass amp. Without a tweeter or horn the sound is just muddy, and there's a reason stereo triumphed over mono many moons ago (Y)

I agree completely. I got an old Marantz amp off ebay for a tenner and paired it with some fairly cheap speakers by Acoustic Energy and it sounded mint. I eventually upgraded the amp but only cos i couldn't think of anything else for my 21st birthday at the time.

And regarding Bose - if you are talking the Acoustimass stuff make sure you read some comparisons with other speakers for the same price - they'll probably get trounced.

I've had a quick look on the ebay and there doesn't seem to be too much ending soon that's worthwhile, but here's a start:

amplifiers:

Nad amp and receiver

Marantz amp

Pioneer Amp

Look for old stuff from brands like Nad (my personal favourite), Rotel, Cyrus, Marantz, B&O, Cambridge Audio. Be careful when looking at stuff from Sony, Pioneer, Technics, Panasonic Kenwood etc that it hasn't just come from a dismantled midi system.

Speakers:

Have a look at eltax monitor III's on Richer Sounds or otherwise:

Old Bang and Olufsen

If you avoid acoustic solutions and anything that looks like it's off a cheap midi system you'll probably be alright - brands to look for are Mission, Acoustic Energy, Eltax, Gale, Mordaunt Short, Kef, Quad.

Hope this has been some help,

Andy

So what would you guys recomend if I was going to go the buy amp and speakers route, and how much would it cost me, roughly that is?

It's probably easier if you tell us your budget and we'll advise you on what to get.

Amp wise you should be able to pick something decent up from ebay pretty damn cheap. Remember that you don't need all the flashy things like graphic equalizers etc, and go for something functional, marantz, cambridge audio, NAD are all good quality. As for speakers i'm not really up on them, and am using a 25 year old pair of sony ones off my parents old system. There not the greatest quality in the world, but sound pretty good considering they were free :)

sorry i disagree with nearly everything people have posted, cheap amps sound cheap and cheap speakers sound even cheaper. If you havent got a clue you'll probably think your £100 eltax floorstanders are good but compare them to something with a clue and you'll realise.

Its like a trials rider jumping on an onza tv and thinking its the muts nuts, then riding a decent bike.. "oh"

If you want to build a proper system spend the money, go for a decent amp and if it were me I'd only buy B&W speakers, you can get some bargains on ebay if you go for the older systems. 601's perhaps if you want a small system?

That there is no doubt about, however as JTM said, a cheap amp and speakers will generally sound a whole lot better than pc speaker systems. I don't profess to be an audiophile, but i do know that beyond a certain level, the sound quality you get from a pc will be limited by the audio hardware in the pc. Since most people use either on-board sound, or relatively cheap soundcards, then a cheap amp and speaker setup will match that. Unless your spending upwards of £100 on a sound card then more expensive amp and speaker setups will basically sound pretty much identicle due to the input signal being the same, not soo hot, quality.

I've not seen 601's go on ebay for less than 100 quid. I also don't think that they have any real advantage over their competitors in the price range. That said i would like a pair of 602's to complement my nad amp.

I don't pretend that eltax monitor III BOOKSHELF speakers can be compared with B&W but like Andy (tank rider) said, it's not likely that either the amp or the speakers will be the limiting factor in the audio quality, and they are a good speaker for the money, having listened to them in various peoples set ups.

I agree I think. My set-up consists of:

Mac Mini -> 3.5mm lead -> Phono Cables -> Sony TA-FE370 amp and Sony CD deck -> Mission M33i Speakers (link)

Sounds amazing if you ask me. Something like that is bound to make you happy. Go into your overdraft :P

harman/kardon soundsticks II rock my world. awesome highs, mids, lows etc. small, very chic looking, but expensive for what they are. 2.1 system for PC etc, but still very loud considering their size..

I agree with the whole amp and speakers thing!!

You can pick up an amp, cd player and speakers for the same price as a crappy hi fi in comet, you know the ones people buy cus they look good :ermm:

I've got Cambridge audio amp and technics cd player rigged up to laptop via headphone cable jobbie, works a treat and the sound quality is super good!! Can just wack the headphone bit into ipod as well which is ideal.

Get a stacked system then you'll have a decent stereo and pc speakers (Y)
