  1. I know I never quite reached the dissertation stage, but I wrote quite a few reports of 5 or so thousand words and never really found it to be work. If you got on with it when you should and not played chicken with the deadline it wasnt too hard. Certainly, at half nine this morning and staring into a container full of 40 kilo boxes, writing stories seemed as far removed from work as possible.
  2. If you look at the point the crack started from, its a very sharp change in section. Sharp corners magnify the stress in the material so its very common to see failures like that. Think about snapped spokes, most of the ones I've seen have gone at the bend for the head rather than halfway up the spoke at its thinnest point.
  3. Yeah, it covers all the marques, so audi, vw, seat, skoda, bentley, bugatti and lamborghini. Interesting site to wander about.
  4. Yep, thought up by a neandathal who would be happy for us all to live in mud huts eating seeds and berries and die young
  5. Cheap and effective isnt the reason for an eccentric BB. Its almost one of those things that only gets done because it can be done. It's a very elegant solution to the problem, but isnt really for the masses to my mind.
  6. Get on and cheat if you feel like it, it'll make the good blokes in the world look a lot better
  7. Mr Leeson has got it sorted.
  8. Two years of uni had to have some use To be fair, its bloody hard to gauge the heat you're putting into alloy, overcooking it is way too easy.
  9. The recovery stages of annealing aluminium occur from 100 celsius upwards, and even then, the grain size remains similar and the dislocations decrease slightly. I said warm, not blast to hell and back again, intelligent use of a blowlamp works, as does boiling water if you're not too happy about gas torches. The last one I did this way could still be (uncomfortably) touched by hand, so the temperature was nowhere near changing anything.
  10. The easiest way to do it is to warm the crank. Twatting the hell out of it will probably bend the BB axle, and I doubt the taper is corroded to the crank so penetrating oil is only half a cure. Get some tension on with the puller, then warm the crank up with a blowlamp. Try not to get too much heat into the axle, and it should pop straight off.
  11. Not entirely sure, I always think its got something to do with you putting less force through the pedals to move the bike about, so you dont need to pull so hard on the bars to balance that out.
  12. An easier gear will make the front end feel lighter, in general it'll improve control a bit, up to a point it improves static gaps and makes rolling gaps worse. You really need to try both back to back on similar riding dude.
  13. Don't dodge the question, I havent seen a clear answer anywhere. To put it in a non-political context, if I ride in the trial, will I get ranking points and will I be eligible for selection for worlds rounds? EDIT: (put this in to avoid any whining) Seeing as you're close to the organiser and best placed to answer this, I thought this was the best place to ask this question.
  14. Take the chain off the sprockets, try moving the cranks, pedals, wheel and freehub independantly of each other. Should give you some idea what's up.
  15. On the normal axles, it is known for the driveside alloy insert to break and come loose within the steel section of the axle. The best way I found to get round it was put the adjusting tool on the cone, hold it still with grips or a spanner and undo the left side allen socket.
  16. Rookie's have vees, experts have maguras
  17. Its an Expert Lovely machine whatever you like to call it, I'm glad you've still got it
  18. You might get a couple of hundred for it, but if it was built for you its a bit more special to yourself than just another old frame. I'd keep it.
  19. Nothing that would be impressively dangerous. Wandering about on single scaffold planks 25 foot up in the air is a good one to start with though
  20. Get in line kiddo I'd do a hell of a lot better if it was a dangerous quiz rather than a dirty one. EDIT: hmmm, found the one about lying, make that £15.10
  21. http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZzonzallQQhtZ-1 Had one on that finished yesterday, more should appear I reckon.
  22. careful if its like last year, sunburn in ten minutes Might even find a bike to ride this time rather than just wandering about eating pork sarnies and fruit cocktail out of a can haha
  23. You can just swap the axle end caps and use a QR in the trials hub.
