Long is cool now. Short is for oldskoolers. I guess. I do tend to like the way longer bikes look. By the way, how do trials bikes compare to XC bikes in terms of wheelbase? What's a normal wheelbase for an XC hardtail?

I might have had the same problem. It seemed for a bit that I was stuck at six feet static gapping. I've practiced more, and it definitely seems easier to gap six feet now. Don't know if I'm going farther now, haven't measured in a while. i definitely try gaps that I might not even have seen before though. I'd say practice technique more than power/trying to get farther. Once its easier to get smaller gaps, you can start going bigger again perhaps?

you might get a little more power from 175's, but you won't notice if you've never run 170's. 170's will have more clearance. I recently switched from 175's to 170's, and I'm liking it much better.
