I Want A Van

Ali C

Recommended Posts

I would really like a van, I travel the country to ride and I am fed up of sleeping uncomfily in my car, camping or paying for a hotel.

I would really like a medium sized van that I could put some sort of bunk in the back to sleep a couple of people.

does anyone have any ideas on what would suit my needs? I have seen the VW Transporter, I think that would be sweet, but I am worried they are too big for day to day use, also I have no idea what they are like for fuel effinciancy.

I recken I could get 3 bikes and maybe 3 (cosey) beds in a transporter, anything smaller would be puching it and would only sleep one person.

Anyway, I am open to opinions.

Also, insurence, I am 23 and have 2 years no claims and my 306 turbo D is currently just under £500 a year, any ideas on costs of insuring a van?

Cheers guys

Ali

member that comp in exeter the big indoor one, well me phil and porter slept in the back of a trasnporter, and we just filled it with bedding it was quite cumfy, although the bikes were sumwere else, unless u desning sum kinda of thing to hang them on the sides?

I have started looking for a van to transport MX bikes and christ its not easy is it!

All the vans are either huge things like LWB High top trannys or small 106 vans, the right sized vanz are Mercades vitos and they are mega money!

Mini bus ?

remove the back seats, leave about 6 seats ( 3 are in the front) then you can get rid of the rest of the seats and put beds ?

perfect tour BUS :P

think it should be mini bus *** :)

Edit: heres one already done :Pmini bus

Yeah, my mate did that for a road trip. He bought an old LDV transit-style thing (LDV are the lowest of the low when it comes to Vans), ripped out some seats, and went on a 9 person bike road trip to the alps. So 9 people, camping stuff, 12 bikes and a load of spares. I doubt Ali needs something that big though!

I think mini bus is a good idea as you can get a ldv pritty cheap ish and one that is easy to use as a noramly car :)

convert a tranny lol, the size is surprising once your use to them you can fit the small wheel base ones in some tight spots considering you are a decent driver too, there no bigger then a salon family car.

Our old transit was 2.5l diesil did 350-400 miles to a tank which was 60litres i dont know how to convert it to mpg? your get around 400 miles to a 60litre a tank as your doing long journeys.

and we never had a problem with it.

Transit connect - My dad had one and I spent a night in the back of it once - quite cosy actually although their quite new so prices will still be high.

how about the previous ford courier or escort vans there spacious, mostly reliable and most of all cheap. Although, I have only listed fords, do you have and makes of van that you would prefer?

my vito 108 cdi is mint, not bad on fuel, cost about 800 pound to insure, but i do have 9 points on my licence. it has a fold out bed, with under storage, dvd player, suround sound, good stereo, electric hookup, 12v fridge, brand new respray, alloys, chipped to 120 bhp (standard 80), full history and is yours for the bargain price of £5000 you know you want it!!

Most mid sized vans are going to take up more room than your average small van.

if you want a van to sleep in, like Rob Poyzers is ideal, Vito's and Transporters are similar size aswell as the likes of the transit, renault traffic, vauxhall vivaro and nissan primastar, there the sort of vans you should be looking for.

plus on the fuel side, i ran the aire valley van which is a primastar (nissan) and the MPG is ok, but what you got to remember is, it is bigger than your average car and not the most aero dynamic machine.

id have a Vito or to something of that effect if i was to buy something to travel around in.

Wayne.

EDIT: Rob what miles is your Vito? and what does it cost to tax it for 12 months?

Mates just got that, diesel, powersteering all that lark.

Easily sleep two in it, its mega.

Have two defenders at work. one 90 and 110. and i dought they would be that compfy to sleep two. one maybe. they have benches on the sides which eat up nearly 2 of width along the length of the back.

they are awsome though.

its got 160,000 ish on not sure exactly and tax for a year is about £190.00

looking at my post's i think iv talkied myself into buying it! lol

We've just sold our landy 90. Got a trade in at the garage for £5000. Its R reg. 60k, but: immobiliser kept cutting the engine off so its been removed, clutch is randomly sticking in gear, paintwork is bubbling and the cobwebs are everywhere. in the winter its cold as hell (N)

The plus side is although the mpg is awful, you can get an lpg conversion like you were thinking ali. that would bring it back to the equivalent of 40 mpg (as lpg is about half the price) Whoever it was before was right though, top speed is 70 maybe 80 :P and i kinda get turned on by the vibrations :)

But they're pimp... trouble is unless youre a damn good mechanic who regularly services their vehicles, it IS expensive. A van is definitly the better option.

Easily sleeps two? How short are you! I've slept in a 110 before but there is no way you could lie flat out in a 90. 90s suck for fitting bikes in too. All that space just seems to disapear when you put a bike near them.

I want one again though!

Yeah, go for a vito if you can afford it! My ex's dad had one as a company car because he was an XC nut-job. He had the 5/6 seater (the one with 2 rows of seats anyway) and you could easily fit complete bikes in lengthways behind the rear seats. That arangement wouldnt be any good for sleeping though, because of the bulkhead between the seats and the back. Was megga comfey though, and quick, and most of all quiet and smooth, so one without the full width bulkhead would be awesome. Much much nicer on the long drives than things like tansits, can just relax and listen to music, even quiet music if you want! :P

But if you can't afford it, the transits are always good old reliable beasts.

400 miles to 60 liters is 30.3mpg (Y)
