hi personally go for the maggie as they are more powerful and for pads go for a set of heatsink as they're so grippy

Helpful (Y)

Personally, I'd go for the magura. BUT get standard(plastic) hosing, because in my opinion braided makes the brake feel spongy. As for pads, a set of Koxx Blues and a good grind will do you nicely for these wet, winter months.

magura's arent more powerful at all. my vee owns the majority of magura set ups. avid ultimate arms, pazmatic crvs on a light grind or smooth rim are the best pads ive used, and ive tried a few. the vee has better hold, just as good bite but some dont like the feel, thats just the way i have mine set up. it really does hold when it really shouldnt. and theres less to go wrong.

Vee brakes on the rear can be annoying as they don't really bite. Added with the close pads on a buckled rim it's kind of a pain and modulation is better on a Magura. But they both have their advantages. I like Hydraulic brakes in general, but when it comes down to it i prefer cable for one reason; they don't break as easy.

magura good points:

pretty reliable

mud and grime doesn't effect them as much

good bite

lighter

Magura bad points:

When they go wrong, they are harder/more expensive to fix.

hold power isn't the best

pads wobble so you can feel them knocking and they wear oddly/get rounded corners

loud

not much modulation unless with smooth rim and black pads

Vee good points

Unreal holding power, MUCH better than a magura

more modulation even with a grind

easier to pull than a magura

more adjustable

pads don't wobble and are easier to change

can get the rear wheel out without deflating the tyre

can get spares nearly anywhere in the world for cheap

Vee bad points

need more work to keep smooth

can be expensive for a top setup

not much bite (from my 3 years experience)

heavier

looks worse

initial setup can be tricky

Don't be fooled when people say maggies have more power. They may indeed have more bite, but vees are like clamps on your rims when the wheel is trying to roll backwards.

I used a vee for 3 years, although I have now moved to an Echo TR brake just to see if they are any good. so far I like the bite power, but I am still shocked by the lack of holding power.

Pretty much everything was cover up. Vee indeed have more hold power, but sometimes mag are better. Thing is that usually frames are with 4-bolts mounts and you need the vee adapters. Several my friends combined already snapped like 5 or 6 pears of vee adapters! <_< Besides vee can be expensive and hard to adjust if you want maximum power from them. So maybe testing will show you what you prefer. Less hold power, but I'd go magura.

Ive used vee and magura on the front both with plazmatic pads on a smooth rim, and i would recommend going for a magura, my vee brake was awful, it lacked in everything. Power, Hold, Bite and the lever felt horrible. It was impossible to set up, the left hand arm always rubbed on the rim. I had this set up with my vee. Shimano Xl 2008 arms, Plaz crv's, Oddessy Slic linear Cable and a Avid sd7 lever. All of it was brand new.

So basically in my view these are the pros and cons of both.

Vee Pros:

Umm.

Vee Cons:

Hard to set up,

Pads wouldn't hit square,

Awful feel to the lever,

Awful hold, power and bite.

Magura Pros

Easy to set up,

Better lever feel,

More power and you can have modulation,

More choice of pads.

Magura Cons :

Can snap hoses,

Can crack slaves and lever body.

Tpas break,

May freeze in the winter if you use a water bleed.

Hope this helps.

If one pad is rubbing you need to put more tension on the vee arm on that side. They'll be a bolt that you screw in putting more tension on the arm. to set it up you just have to put the pad on the rim straightish, pull the lever and tighten the pad up. Also, you have to try and get the arms to be as parallel as possible to the rim (when the brake is pulled) to make it feel and work best.

Use a vee on the front and its awesome, super light grind and coustsinks - stupid hold and more than enough bite :D

On my old forks its was very, very noisy and bite was spectacular; since putting pace reverse mount forks on the bite has reduced alittle (but with way more modulation ;) ) and the honk has reduced to a woosh which is far nicer :)

The front vee is about 100g lighter than a maggie setup which was my reasoning to use it.

I wasn't going to go on about all the advantages before but there are a few not covered.

Vees can get in the way more. They like to shake too when jumping about when not used with much calliper tension. Which both cause the brake to grab the rim. And because of the movement in them, i've broken two calipers. One being a Deore and the other a XTR. I also remember before Avid brakes were good i always seemed to have problems with my Arch Rivals.

Vee brake levers are cheaper and stronger.

The Vee can be setup for barspins/ whips if that's what your into. Using a longer Linear cable.

Wet weather pads for Vee brakes only seem to be Coust and Rock Blue currently. (yes Rock Blues work in the rain/wet)

Vee brakes are totally interchangeable with other brands, eg, Shimano Lever, Avid Caliper, Odyssey Cable.

The Vee brake generally needs more specialist tools for the job of setup/ maintenance. Cable cutters/ cable lube/ crimping tool/ allen keys. The Magura needs allen keys and knife. (as water bleeds don't need fluid or bleed syringe)

Between the two i would go vee.

My vee was amazing, bit great both forwards and backwards, NEVER! slipped on a wall, the hold it had was insane.

This was until Kennard snapped on of the spring adjusters, and then it all went to pot :P

Don't be put off by people telling you there shit, cause they really arn't :)

As long as the Magura works and doesn't need bleeding it's

going to be a lot better than the v-brake. The Magura would be my

choice and any good rider will either have discs or Maguras. They

won't have v-brakes unless they have to.

Hope this helps.

I chose to use vees when I won a french round of the world championships, came 3rd overall in the world that year in expert. I also ran vees out of choice when I came 4th in the Euopean Champs in master category as well as the time I came 8th in the final of a UCI World Cup round.

I've had very goo luck with vee's, but that's all I have ridden so far. Took the time to really learn how to set them up proper and I'm very pleased. Also, I don't have easy access to trials specific parts over here, so vee is the best option for cheap quick replacement at the local bike shop - not that this would be an issue for you.

I would like to say that the Moe green pads work nicely with my set up/light grind, but they are crap once wet, so I may look into the rock Blue's as suggested as it's rainy here too.

Have had several sets of vees over the years and (for trials) hated them all. One tiny bit of grit in the cable housing or any water and the whole feel of the brake is gone.

One bike of mine has had the same old set of maggies for about 10 years - I havent needed to do anything apart from change the pads and they just keep working. A brilliant design.
