Car Damage

Ok,

Some scum bag has scratched my girlfriends car. Looks like they've used a medium grade sandpaper and scratched a cross into the drivers side rear panel (Ford Ka). It's approx. 5" x 3" and I've been told it feels rough but not deep.

It's scratched white...if that makes a difference, perhaps a base coat of some sort? However I'm guessing they'll sand away a section and re-paint that regardless?

Obviously, I know nothing of this but I'm guessing some people have experienced this and can offer advice. I'll put up a photo in a moment when my Blackberry has finished updating.

This won't be going through the insurance as the premiums won't be worth it. How much are you roughly looking at? A couple of my dads mates owns body shops, so I'm hoping this can be done slightly on the cheap but she'd like a estimate figure.

Any advice welcome :) Photo to follow.

You might be lucky, and get away with some fine rubbing compound and t cut on that. It looks like its just cut at the lacquer, not through to the colour, so hopefulyl wouldnt be too bad.

Excellent :) Thanks a lot (and TomR!)

It doesn't actually look so bad on full screen, she only sent me a photo on my phone and it looked awful on that. A close up and you can still see the colour behind it.

Thanks again!

Seems a wierd thing to happen to someones car randomly?

has she got a possessive ex or something? hence the x scratch? hmmm

Its Cardiff...it's full of scum and unfortunately it's a regular occurrence on the that street with peoples cars being damaged. Cars have been ran into, keyed, broken into etc.

I thought it was a bit odd too, but she said she's not pissed anyone off lately...just one of those things I guess. Thing is she hasn't touched her car for over 2 weeks, so who knows how long its been there.

Ah ball ache, i went Cardiff not too long ago for an oasis gig, didnt get such a good reception off the locals but still had a decent weekend and wrecked a hotel room if that's any reassurance?

Where did you stop? I was right near the Cardiff Uni, it's not bad in most places around there. I wouldn't exactly say its a high crime rate either because most people in that bit are students - but all the locals are little f**kers, no doubt about it.

Guess it's the same in most places like that now anyway.

me and 3 others stayed at the campanile hotel i think it was? still got the key actually and the other 8 stayed at some hostel in the centre by the wetherspoons which sounded a lot better than our hotel practically on the motorway haa. Ended up in some gay bar near the venue and then just random pubs but was too sweaty and nackered to commit to a night out really so went casino then back to the hotel haaa.

Yeah suppose you can have bad nights everywhere, mix of alcohol and people who can't handle their alcohol always results in a loss.

And the ethnics don't help :P (Joke, before anyone shoots me :) )

Yea, I know the place, it's in Pentwyn, I stopped in Gabelfa which is about 10 minutes away from that hotel. I stopped at Travelodge too, which was on the M4 Services, it's quite good there, very quiet.

It's good down Cardiff Bay, and Barry Island just because of the cheapness of it all. I'm there again next weekend, although it's for the last time as shes finished the old University now and is moving back here.

Ha, I went to Swansea last wednesday down the M4, stopped at the services just outside Barry Island which had a Travelodge.

Worst come's to worst and if it won't T-Cut out/compound, get some very light wet an dry (1500-2000 grit) an using water with washing up liquid in, lightly rub it down until the score's have gone, then bring it back up with compound and then polish. Should fetch it out but only do it as a last resort really......

Is that colour magic shit any good? With the dye? Or will t-cut do just as good? And can you find an example of the rubbing compound you mean? :)

I'm beginning to think you're stalking me Tom...Ikea...Cardiff...My bed this morning.

As george said, abrasive compound and polish is the way to go.

Going by that picture I don’t think you’re going to completely remove it by hand.

You may have to go down the route of machine polishing, and a 2 step method.

I'm sorry to hear that it happened to her car, some people are such tw@s...

Hey,

Sorry I have only just seen this.

As a professional car valeter I have seen this a few times.

As said above it looks like only the surface has been scuffed, hopefully only the laquer. Most cars have roughly 30 layers of paint so hopefully you can gain them layers back!

First rule - t cut is a no no, I don't care what anyone says, it's dreadful stuff!

What you need is Farecla G60 compound, personally i'd use a medium grade. A mopp would be ideal (buffing machine) although you probably don't have one :(

Apply the compound in a circular motion, then rub off in the same motion, you may need to apple a few coats.

After you have applied the compound you need to protect and seal, therefore I would use Auto Glym Radiant wax to finish it off :)

For starters, I would never take advise off an astra owners club.

I work in the trade preparing 3 cars a day, and I have been on training days for more knowledge.

I personally wouldn't touch the stuff, and if you look at those pictures of his results, in my opinion the paint work doesn't look great - I can see swirls, with my process they wouldn't remain.

Agreed,

DaveKG is pretty much regarded as the fountain of all knowledge on Detailing World.

He is quite literally obsessed and has tested pretty much every product on the market and documented it.

I assume you are a member of Detailing world?

If not, go read and come back when you know more.

As for cars having 30 coats of paint. Your kidding right! Paint thickness on cars varies between 180 microns to 240 on some german wagons, out of that around 40% will be clearcoat.

I would say looking at those scratches you should be very careful as to not strike through. Ideally you need a paint thickness gauge to check if it can be repaired without needing any paint.

Give it a go and if it doesn't strike though then happy days if it does then its respray time.

Cheers for trying to debate my knowledge, but I do know how many coats of paint a car has, and I know differnt company's use differnt amount of layers.

Okay, he may be some big dude from detailing world, but he's doing that test to show how can use it, I could probably use it equally effective, although I choose not to due to expense and ease of the job, Farecla has been proven to restore damage more effective.

Look, I have been trained by Auto Glym and Auto Smart, both of those companies are far more respected in the valeting industry than detailing worlds.

Personally i'm happy with what I know and what I use, so if you would like to use t cut go nuts but it eats the paintwork and in time that panel will fade.

Bet Dave at detail world didn't tell you that :P
