Gentlemen....car Buffs...

Sorry, just seemed like you were doing the generic piss-take from someone whos against modifying cars. I do agree with your points on daft modifying, I've seen enough guys with bikes going after bhp figures, makes them alright on a strip or on a track but pretty useless on the road.

I do have a small amount of experience with fast cars and their engineering, so I'd never make the typical blanket statements, I spotted one a while back on some Ford forum that some guy with an XR4x4 with 300bhp was faster than a Ferrari...

I was just saying if he wanted a really fast car for £16k, and the R32 was on his list then it could be done.

Thought about a Monaro VXR? Probably return about 15/20 to the gallon if you're lucky, but it's within your budget.

Ooooooooh my bad didn't read it massivly fully, I know f**k all about cars.

So he just wants a sunday car to go round corners in, or a car to actually use?

I'm pretty sure he wants a car that he can have a good thrash through the B/A roads whilst still being every day friendly.

To be fair I've stopped reading this properly now aswell, it's gone from helpful advice to a pissing contest. B)

People have all given their thoughts on what car to buy - With a £16k budget and a VERY loose brief on what he wants his car to do, people are going to have a different opinion to you.

To cut a long story short....

Buying a new car within 3 weeks. Options so far:

Just get what'll make you happy

and make sure you'll like it for the next X number of years you plan to stick with it

Screw whatever everyone else thinks!

Only thing I would say, the lad listed preety user friendly, 4 seater car's, with space. Perhaps a lotus/porsche wouldn't be practical for what the lads wanted?

An hy does everybody keep posting -'Get (x) then have (x) done to it?'

He's 20, it's not asif an R32 isn't quick enough already??

I'm all for tailoring cars... A tweak and a fiddle here and there to make it fit your purposes better. It's when you see a Skyline with a massive engine and standard brakes and dampers, or a huge body kit with a lawn mower engine underneath.

If you're going for the big saloon option, the E39 M5 is a cracking buy at the moment. So cheap in fact that they're not depreciating at the moment, and some prices are actually going up! Plus you can get a facelifted pre-Sept 2001 (I think) car so you've got a 400bhp V8, and £180 a year tax... Expect to pay £12k. So there's money left over for uprated front brakes, and a holiday.

You all know I'm right when I say RS2 though. There performance is outstanding, infinitely upgradable (but why would you!), they have instant respect from other "in the know" motorists and are an estate car ?

0 to 60 in 4.6 seconds, 163 mph (limited) and Porsche engine, suspension brakes and styling coupled with Quattro and legendary handling characteristics ?

I know thats what I'd buy and insure for 16K.

Fifteen grand for a 15 year old estate? The performance was outstanding for the time. They're not infintely upgradable - you can't upgrade it to become a battleship for example - and you only get 'instant respect' from motoring geeks who don't look at a fifteen year old estate and think it's someone in £800 worth of Audi 80.

Oh, and Quattros never really handled that well. They only cleaned up on the rally stages because they were the only ones who had four wheel drive.

Got fifteen grand to spend? Want Porsche engine, suspension and brakes? Buy a Porsche?

There not 15K any more.

A MINT RHD Black one (rare as f**k?) with full specialist service history is on ebay at the moment for 10K.

Also, are you denying 4.6 seconds to 60 for a fully loaded estate car is slow or something ? And that 163mph is not enough for the UK's roads ? And that the RS2's aren't an amazing handling car ? I've never driven one, but I've been a passenger in one and it was f**king amazing.

As far as I can see the RS2 is a VERY well thought of car to motor heads and despite being 15 years old, and being a mix and match of Audi and Porsche they are one of the best truly useable cars with big performance figures.

If you put an RS2 up against a Boxster it would have it for breakfast I think, look at the performance figures.

The performance may be good but it still looks a bag of shit...

Personally I'd go for the boxster/ another porsche.

He's a semi pro rugby player so I'd imagine it's as much about performance as comparing it to everyone else in the teams car, thus he needs something with the most street cred, not old car geek cred.

RS2's don't look shit at all, they look lush

And what are the other guys going to think when he rocks up in an estate car that sounds like rolling thunder and blows the doors off all there pissy little shopping cars ?

Your points are null and void in this situation anyway, because you've ignored what he wants.

I know.

I was just rising to the "oh the irony" bait :P

Just a quick one though, how many bikes and bags of rugby kit can you fit in the back of a Porsche, M5 or any other car with the same performance figures as an RS2 ?

Oh wait, there aren't any cars with those sorts of figures that you can fit bikes, bags, shopping, more than 2 people etc etc

Though they do handle very, very well indeed and are a bargain these days! thumb.gif

Still bet theres nicer looking and better cars out there that are the same price.

So you wouldnt have one no?

If it was given to me, well ovbiously.. but its the same principle with a car that you dislike, ovbiously you would have it if it was given to you but it wouldn't be your choice of car over somthing similar price.
