Bleeding With Water?

Before anyone says "use the search" I have!!!

I’ve just bled my rear magura with water, well I think I have!

It feels REALLY spongy!

have I done something wrong?

Right this is how I done it:

1st, Fixed cross over

2nd, Filled bath,

3rd, Undone the allen bolt on the cylinder

4th, squeezed the lever until the bubbles came out

5th, redone the bolt,

6th, fitted to bike!

7th, said " this is SHITE!"

can anyone put up how to do it properly, with pics?!

cheers Matt! (Y)

You need to undo the bolt from the slave cylinder, and the mastercylinder in the lever.

Its much less hassle to acieve a clean bleed using a syringe and fittings IMO.

Make sure you have the tpa adjusted all the way out before hand.

If you are going to do it in the bath, cover the hole in the lever when pumping, and cover the hole in the slave cylinder when releasing, this pushes fluid through the system.

Replace the allen bolts in the slave and master cylinder while the brake is still submerged.

Use antifreeze to prevent freexing brakes! (also helps prevent corrosion of bits in the brake)

Best way to do it:

Use the heatsink bleed kit in the bath :)

Undo the bolts, submerge it and pump water through untill you see no bubbles. Then put the bolts back in before you take it out the water.

Well... That's how I did it :P

A maugra bleed kit is good enough.

A bath bleed is good if you can do them right. COMPLETELY dismantle the brake...hoses, bolts, calipers the lot. Put underwater, make sure no bubbles come out anymore blah blah blah and then rebuild it all still under the water (obviously)...and there you go, piss easy.

Make sure;

1. you undo the TPA ALL the way out

2. shake the parts under water to get ride of trapped bubbles

Personally I disagree with all of the above, but then I would.. :P

I bleed my magura without taking anything off the bike (other than the bolts which block the ends of the system of course), I just dip the whole end of my hadlebar in a big bucket of water, so that it is submerged past the brake, undo bolt underwater, pump lever, put thumb over hole for 1s while the system sucks in more water, repeat a couple of dozen times, then do up both bolts (I sometimes even just leave it there, if I can get the bucket much higher than the back brake, as water slowly seeps through the system on its own, bleeding itself). I always get a perfect bleed from that, no lever squidgyness for me, plus its free and only takes 5 mins!

Something similar to above:

1) Take brake off

2) Place in bath

3) Undo both bolts

4) Put finger over the hole in the slave cylinder and squeeze the lever slowly

5) Take finger off slave cyclinder hole and put it on the master cyclinder hole

6) Release the lever gently

7) Keep repeating this until no more bubbles come out at the slave cylinder end

i had a similar problem recently, when bleeding a maggie without a proper syringe. so this is what you can do:

mix your water+alcohol fuid in a glass. screw an open syringe (without this piston you push) into the caliper. then unscrew the bleeding screw at the handle. having everything at the correct angle, once you poor the fluid into the syringe you should (haha) put it into your mouth and blow strongly so as to pump the fluid into the system.

if the system is still sucking up fluid, just poor some more into the syringe, but make sure you always have some fluid in there - this will keep the air out.

this way worked with me, it took 5 minutes to do and there is no air in the system whatsoever (Y)

edit: bath bleed is easy but its better to used demineralised water for this.

All i ever do to bleed my brake,

1) Bowl full ow water

2) Take necisary bolts out

3) Put mouth round the master piston bolt hole..blow..

4) Keep blowing till you see lots of bubbles in the bowl

5) Suck back through the magura, until you get water in your mouth

6) Put your finger around the slave hole, take a deep breath and go again

7) When your happy with the bleed, put your finger on the slave hole, submerge the brake back into water

8) Fit it, And go and wank over how good your brake is :)

Thats a pretty cool way to bleed, however, don't you get the odd trace of toxic maggy oil in ur mouth?

I just use a syringe and find it easier, you can get cheapo syringes at vets or whatever, about 10p. Can also do it while still on the bike.

Unscrew TPA.

Turn lever parallel to floor.

Unscrew slave cylinder bleed bolt.

Fill syringe with water and screw in tight.

Unscrew grub screw at lever.

Screw in clear tube.

Get someone to hold bottle to catch fluid at lever, and hold up bike, and tap the hose.

Gently let fluid through with the syringe. Depending on the size of the syringe, you might need to bleed several times. To do this i just take the syringe off (but NOT the plastic hose that attaches to the syringe. Then get someone to put their finger on top of the plastic syringe hose to stop fluid escaping, and then fill syringe and put it back on.

Then do it all up again, and your sorted, perfect bleed

Then use listerine anyway.

Toxic? Isnt it just vegetable oil?

Guys i need a hand,

here's what i did in order..

1. filled bath

2. put whole brake under water

3. uncrewed the bolt in the lever the really small allen key bleeding one

4. unscrewed the allen key bolt on the one cylinder, one that doesn't have a tube coming out

5. pump lever a few times, till most of the oil came out

6. blew through the cylinder to get the rest out

now.

i've been putting finger over lever bleed grub, pullinglever all the way back, then taking finger off and putt it over the cylinder bolt before releasing

kept doing that until no more air came out.

is this right?

reply quick, my hands are getting cold in this bath ;[
