I remember the spelling bee from when i first joined the forum. I never heard the buzzzz noise in threads that contained posts of his though :( .

I want to see the bee get to work in new members chat tonight, that'd annoy them a lot (<<<notice i got it correct). :D

Go bee, go!

I really don't like nit-picking on spelling, especially with words like alot, everyone knows what the word is and it's a better way of spelling it anyway as it saves time as you don't have to use the space bar.

I can understand it when people like Pete Wright make a topic, and you need some sort of enignima machine to decode it (and BTW i am dyslexic myself). But with words like alot, it just annoys me, also insignificant grammatical mistakes. Isn't / Isnt. Everyone reads them as the same thing, so who cares.

Spelling Bee - helping to stop the evolution of language or just been anoying? You decide. :P

I don't think you understand how painful it is for me to see spelling mistakes. It reminds me of when that ugly ginger kid pulled my wings off. Luckily I had a friend who was a vet so I got fixed up, but it was a very unpleasant experience. But that's a story for another day.

You can call me a pedant if you like, I can't help it. I wasn't bio-engineered by NASA to let mistakes such as "alot" slide. The English language is a beautiful thing that we can be proud of. Evolution of the language is one thing - Producing a nation of illiterate clowns writing incomprehensible drivel is another altogether. Would the world be a better place if textisms and misplaced apostrophes ruled? No, of course not. You need a healthy balance, but I would argue that mistakes are mistakes. You can argue that it's evolution all you want for words like "podcast", but some things are not new or clever, they're just wrong. So perhaps I'm just beeing annoying.

However, that notwithstanding, you must remember that I am semi-retired now. No-one appreciates the work I've been doing around here, so I've moved onto pastures new, and taken up golf. I still browse the forum, so when a thread such as this one appears with my name in the title, I stick my head in. In my pre-retirement days, I did not correct everyone's spellings (that would take too long). Instead, I corrected the most outrageously bad posts, as you suggest I should. In other words I'm saying that in this thread (where I am paying full attention), little mistakes will get corrected when they otherwise wouldn't.

But then again, it doesn't hurt to brush up on the fundamentals, does it JT!?

You should have stung him.

If I'm not very much mistaken, you would put 'everyones' with the apostrophe at the end of the word, i.e.: "Everyones' spelling mistakes" if the word, in this case 'everyone' is not singular.

Quote from englishplus.com : "To make a plural noun possessive, simply add an apostrophe to the word. If the plural does not end in an s, then add an apostrophe plus s."

In some cases 'everyone' takes the singular form, i.e.: "everyone is great" but would it not take the plural form here, could the spelling bee divulge please?

It is causing me great discomfort

You are indeed very much mistaken. This is more of a grammatical question, and is therefore out of my remit, but I will prove you wrong anyway, just for bringing my good name into disrepute.

Everyone's spelling mistakes is the correct grammar. The word "everyone" is singular, despite the fact that it applies to more than one person, in the same way that you have a group of people. One group, many people. The way to tell if a noun in English is singular is to see if it has the letter "s" at the end. For example: Car = Singular, Cars = Plural. There are exceptions of course (The word sheep can be either singular or plural), but as a rule for beginners such as yourself, look for the letter "s".

Everyone's spelling mistakes can be rephrased as the spelling mistakes of everyone. Notice that in the second case, the word everyone is not plural.

What you are getting confused with is when the noun is plural, E.g. In the word "Cats". In this case, the spelling mistakes of the cats would be written as the cats' spelling mistakes. I hope you can appreciate the difference. The exception to this is proper nouns which end in the letter s. In this case you have a choice, as both variations can be used. E.g. James' biscuits is correct, but also James's biscuits may be used.

Now get out there and use your newfound knowledge of the English language!

EDIT: At Shoe - I once had many more posts, and could change such things, but the ravages of time and post deletions have moved to decimate my post count.
